I don't think that the counsellors are needed in small schools with strength up to 450-500 where the teachers and the principals can handle the work of a counsellor and save the parents from unnecessary burden of increased fees due to an additional salary to be paid to a counsellor. The number of students needing counselling in such schools will be quite less which can be easily handled by the school principal or headmistress / headmaster and teachers. Of course, the schools charging high rates of fees or where the strength of the school is quite large, it will be good idea to have a counsellor in the school. The number of counsellors can be increased in proportionate to the strength of the students in the school. In my opinion, one counsellor for every 1000 school strength will suffice. The counsellors ought to be well trained to understand the psychological problems of the young children, especially those who are passing through their adolescence.
