Why Geography is a much-neglected subject

In my student days, I was extremely scared of two subjects, Geography and Biology. However, thanks to my Geography teacher's (in school) '90% suggestion', I got unexpected good marks in Geography in Xth Board and bade farewell to Geography. All my friends also used to avoid Geography.

However, after more than sixteen years of bidding farewell to Geography, I got married to a Geography teacher. After marriage, I have learnt that Geography also is an extremely interesting subject and is based on Scientific propositions. Moreover, there are different branches of Geography like Geology, Remote Sensing, Climatology, Marine Geography, etc, which have very good career prospects. For example, UPSC conducts Geologists' Examination every year and appoints Geologists (Class-I rank) in GSI and IBM. Mining and exploration companies also appoint Geologists in good position.

In spite of good career prospects in various branches of Geography, why parents and students avoid Geography? Geography has consistently been a much-neglected subject of study.

The students don't appreciate the importance and significance of subjects like Geography because of indifferent attitude of teachers during their school days. Some of them become teachers themselves in due course in future and the 'silsila' continues. Geography is a very interesting science. I was very much fascinated with the subject during my school days and used to prepare many maps, even in addition to what was minimum prescribed in the course. A certain minimum knowledge of Geography is must of all individuals.
Let us encourage each other in sharing knowledge.

Most of the students and parents are not aware about the geographical subjects and jobs related to that. Also, there is a myth among the students that there are very less job opportunities for geography related subjects and the other main reason is there are very less number of colleges has geographical courses on their curriculum.
But, really geography is a good subject and has good scope in future. Students also has good number of job opportunities which are paying high comparatively to other subjects.

Whatever happens life should move on...
    Thanks Karthik

Yes, it is one of the neglected subjects in a student's early life. But it proves to be important at graduation level while studying Engineering or Science subjects. For example, when you opt for Geology, the topographical studies of an area involve study of Geography. The allied branches like Environmental science, Remote sensing, Resource Development, Geoinformatics, Geo-Engineering etc in Engineering and Postgraduate courses would remind us the importance of Geography at school academics. Even the job avenues are plenty in departments like ONGC, NRSA, GSI etc.

For that matter every subject is very good and only the candidate must develop allegiance to that particular subject and get interested. Geography is such a subject which is dealt with images and illustrations of our country and Natural resources. In a home of many children we can see one of them getting interested in Maths, other in Science, one of them in History and some may be in Geography. If a person learn this subject with dedication, then he can surely master over it and there are many openings waiting for the illustrious candidates with this qualification.

Generally, parents are so focused for making a teacher, engineer, doctor or a businessman, the idea of encouraging the child for such less discussed and lesser buzzing subjects rarely comes in their mind.

I too agree that Geography is a neglected but interesting subject. Though I learned a bit of Geography in my school, I was compelled to learn it perfectly to appear for my promotional examination. I could only fail successfully twice, and pass in my third attempt luckily. Now I am much interested in world Geography.
