Why Geography is a much-neglected subject
In my student days, I was extremely scared of two subjects, Geography and Biology. However, thanks to my Geography teacher's (in school) '90% suggestion', I got unexpected good marks in Geography in Xth Board and bade farewell to Geography. All my friends also used to avoid Geography. However, after more than sixteen years of bidding farewell to Geography, I got married to a Geography teacher. After marriage, I have learnt that Geography also is an extremely interesting subject and is based on Scientific propositions. Moreover, there are different branches of Geography like Geology, Remote Sensing, Climatology, Marine Geography, etc, which have very good career prospects. For example, UPSC conducts Geologists' Examination every year and appoints Geologists (Class-I rank) in GSI and IBM. Mining and exploration companies also appoint Geologists in good position.
In spite of good career prospects in various branches of Geography, why parents and students avoid Geography? Geography has consistently been a much-neglected subject of study.
