Nandi statue at the Big Temple in Tanjore

The Nandi bull in the Brihadeeswara Temple, in Tanjore, stands 12’ high. The temple built under the reign of the Chola Dynasty between 1003-1010 AD, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The magnificent bull is carved from a single piece of rock and is not just a major tourist attraction, but also revered by believers. As per traditions practised in temples devoted to Shiva, the Nandi statue is erected facing the main sanctum. In the big temple, the Nandi faces a massive size lingam. The intricate sculpting on the bull and the precise dimensions in which it is carved are worth admiration.
