The city of Amritsar, lies on the Main trunk road connecting Delhi and Lahore. The Road was built by Shershah Suri and it traverses through the whole northen half of the Indian subcontinent. This Grand Trunk Road connects Peshawar in Pakistan to Sonargaon in Bangladesh. Being just 32 kms from Lahore, Pakistan, it is located very close to the international border.
In this city, lies the Harmander Sahib alias Golden temple which is the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. This temple attracts more tourists than the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world.
This city is holy to Hindus as well because of Bhagvan Valmiki's or Nirankar Valmiki's ashram was supposed to situated very close to Amritsar, the forest Tapovan in which Goddess Sita gave borth to Lava and Kush.
Shri Sooraj Parkash Granth also states that Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh were the incarnations of Lava and Kush.
The city Amritsar also connects major cities in India like Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta through Rail and Air. The airport of Amritsar is Rani Sansi International Airport and is about 25-20 minutes drive for the center of the city.
It is also connected by air to most of the cities abroad, namely, Birmingham, Toronto, Dubai, Singapore, Tashkent, Ashgabat, London etc from the Raja Sansi International Airport, recently renamed as Guru Ramdas International Airport.
A cargo terminal is also under construction in this city but industry has not been developed because of the proximity to the Pakistan border.
The Indian Railways is planning an high speed rail line to serve Delhi-Amritsar via Chandigarh and Ambala and to travel the distance of 445 km between the two cities in 2.5 hours,compared to nearly 8 hours at present.
The railhead is also connected to major cities close by like Delhi and Mumbai and via those stations connected to the Southern parts of India.
Amritsar is located at 31°38'N 74°52'E? / ?31.63°N 74.87°E? / 31.63; 74.87 and has a continental climate with four seasons - winter( November to march ), summer season (April to June), monsoon season (July to September) and post-monsoon season (September to November).
Annual rainfall is about 790 mm and the minimum temperature recorded here is -2.6*C and the maximum is 47.7*C.
Sikhs for a majority there with about 80% of the population and Hindus with 20% are a minority Average literacy is about 75% as per the 2001 census details. The main spoken languages are Punjabi , Hindi and English.
The population of the city is about 1,500,000 as per the census taken in 2001.
There are some very good higher educational institutions in the city of Amritsar. A civil aviation college is also planned and if the plan is materialised this will the first of its kind in India.

DAV College (established 1955) Government Polytechnic (established 1964) BBK DAV College for Women (established 1967) and Guru Nanak Dev University (established 1969) are some of the educational institutions in the city.
Harmandir Sahib, (Golden Temple) Dhan Dhan Khalsa Gurdwara Manji Sahib, Gurdwara Pipli Sahib, Gurdwara Dera Sahib, Gurdwara San SahibDevan Asthan Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib, Gurdwara Atari Sahib, Gurdwara Patshahi Shevi Dand ,Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib Ji,Gurdwara Guru da Bagh, Kokawali, Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Khadur Sahib and many more like this and other hindu shrines are Durgiana Temple alias Sitla Mandir, Kali Mata Mandir, Mata Lal Devi Mandir, Bijli Pehalwan Mandir, Purshotam Das Mandir, Gopal Mandir and Ramtirth etc.
