Bhagalpur District is located at the south-eastern part of Bihar bordering Jharkhand. It is one of the 38 Districts of Bihar. It is included in the Bhagalpur Division. The District headquarters of Bhagalpur District is Bhagalpur Town. The Town is also the Divisional Headquarter. It is one of the oldest Districts of Bihar. The sacred River Ganga is flowing through the District.
The major economic activity of the District is agriculture. It is also known for handicrafts and handlooms. Bhagalpur silk is known all over the world. The Kahalgaon Termal Power station of NTPC is located in the District. Bhagalpur District is one of the most backward Districts of the country. The Lok Sabha Constituency is Bhagalpur. There are six Assembly seats in the District. It is interesting to note that a sizeable population of the District talk in Angika, a different language written in Devnagari script. The other languages spoken are Hindi, Urdu and Bengali.
Education The literacy rate in the district is 64.96% (2011 Census). There are 1817 schools, 2 universities, I engineering college, 1 medical college, 1 agricultural college and 1 polytechnic in the District.
Tourist spots The major tourist spots of the District are as under:- (a) Mandar Hill: This Hill has tremendous religious significance for the Hindus. Many legends are associated with the Hill. (b) Ruins of Vikramshila: The ancient university of Vikramsila was started by the famous Bengali king, Dharmapala. Its educational standard was second only to Nalanda. It has been also known for ancient Tantrik cult. The ruins can be seen at a distance of 44 km. from Bhagalpur. (c) A Digambar Jain Siddha Kendra is located at Nathnagar village in the District. (d) Tilka Majhi, the famous tribal leader, was born in Bhagalpur District. A statue of Tilka Majhi has been installed near District Collector's residence, near the place where he was hanged. (e) Maharishi Mehi was a medieval period Saint. His Ashram is located at Kuppaghat. (f) Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is also located in the District.
Communication The nearest airport is Patna, which is located at a distance of 229 km. from Bhagalpur Town. The international airport of Kolkata is located at a distance of 324 km. Bhagalpur is more or less properly connected with other parts of the state and the country. The most important Railway station is Bhagalpur. NH-31 and NH-81 are passing through the District.
