The district was created out of the Jhabua district on May 17, 2008. Alirajpur, Jobat and Bhavra are the three tehsils in the district.

Alirajpur is the administrative headquarters of the Alirajpur district. This city of Alirajpur was once the head of the princely state Ali Rajpur. This princely state lies in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, under the Bhopawar agency in Central India.

This new district is situated near the Gujarat and Maharashtra borders. The region is hilly and most of the inhabitants there are aborigines named Bhils. These Bhils tae care of all the trade and business of the Alirajpur town and district.
