Pilibhit constituency is one in Utter Pradesh where another Nehru - Gandhi family dominated since 1984 and Menaka Ganghi wife of Late Sanjay Gandhi has been winning elections with an exception of 1991 election. Even before joining Bhartiya Janata Party she won twice as an independent candidate.
Election 2009 at Pilibhit constituency
Election 2009 was somewhat special at Pilibhit as for the first time Varun Gandhi son of Menaka and Late Sanjay gandhi and cousin of Rahul Gandhi was contesting from Bhartiya Janata Party while Menaka Gandhi herself shifted to Aonla constituency.
There was a great controversy after the unacceptable remarks given by Varun Gandhi in a rally while addressing public and he was even sent to jail. He was charged with NSA (National security act).
Prominent candidates of Pilibhit constituency in election 2009
There were about 32 candidates in the field in election 2009 and the most prominent among them were -
Varun Gandhi
, A 29 years young man and son of Menaka and Sanjay Gandhi was making his debut in the lok sabha election. He was contesting from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
V. M. Singh
, was contesting for Indian National Congress (INC).
Riyaz Ahmad
who lost to Menaka Gandhi in 2004 election was again in the contest. He was contesting for Samajwadi Party(SP).
Buddhsen Verma
was candidate for Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Other candidates from smaller and unrecognized parties were
Chotey Lal Gangwar (NCP), Jamuna Devi (RKSP), Krishna Adhikari(CPI ML (L)), Harish Kumar(BSRD)and Harpal Singh (RCP).
There were some prominent independent candidates namely Viquarul Hasan Khan, Ram Narayan Singh, Mahesh Saxena, Mahavir Singh, Lalta Prasad.
Election 2009 result at Patliputra constituency
There was a huge controversy on Varun Gandhi after his public speech, and he was even arrested before the election. Election commission even suggested BJP not to nominate Varun Gandhi, but the party was with Varun Gandhi, he contested from this constituency for the first time and was victorious defeating his nearest rival V. M. Singh of Indian National Congress by a thumping margin of 2.81 lakh votes.
Even the candidates of BSP and SP lost their deposits.

Here the people are dependent on agriculture. Wheat and sugar cane are the prime production from this area. The economy is contributed by the sugar manufacturing industry and the export business of bamboos and mangoes.
Assembly segments of Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency
Baheri, Pilibhit, Barkhera, Puranpur (SC) and Bisalpur are the assembly segments of this Lok sabha constituency.
At previous elections
Mohan Swaroop who was an active member of PSP represented the constituency since 1957 continuously for three terms and he joined the Congress later. As Congress nominee, he got elected to the Lok Sabha for the fourth time and lost to Janata Party candidate Mohd. S H Khan in 1977 general elections. Congress regained the seat in 1980 and 1984. But Mrs.Maneka Gandhi, younger daughter-in-law of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, chose to fight against Congress. She successfully contested from this constituency as Janata Dal candidate in 1989 and 1996 general elections and as an independent in 1998 and 1999 snap polls. In 2004, she joined the BJP and won the elections. In 2009 general elections, her son Varun Gandhi got elected from here as a BJP candidate and won with a massive margin of 2.8 lakhs in a multi cornered contest. Thus, this constituency has become a strong base for another Gandhi family.
Possible scenario and parties prospects in 2014 General Elections
Varun Gandhi the sitting MP opted to contest from the Sultanpur constituency. Maneka Gandhi has been named as the BJP candidate from this constituency. She is the sitting MP of Aonla constituency. The anti incumbency factor for UPA, the possible swing of BJP in the state and the loyalties of the people to the widow of late Sanjay Gandhi family are crystal clear. So there is a comfortable winning possibility for Manaka Gandhi from here. Her social activities and clean image as politician are her strength. AAP has announced its candidate as Mr.Rajiv Agarwal. BSP is yet to nominate its candidate. The multi-cornered fight would also facilitate the BJP to gather more votes and the split of votes among the other parties would also favour them.
It would be interesting to see that the Gandhi family which is prominent in Indian politics is fighting a political battle in the nearby four constituencies. Rahul Gandhi, the chief campaigner for Congress is contesting from Amethi while his cousin Varun Gandhi is the BJP candidate from Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency which is 35 K.M away from Amethi. The elder daughter-in-law of the Gandhis, Sonia Gandhi is contesting from Rae Bareli. Thus the political battle has turned not only as BJP Vs Congress but also a fight between two families.
Polling for this constituency would be held on 17th April 2014 and counting would take place on 16th May. As of now the candidates for Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency are:
Maneka Gandhi – BJP
Rajiv Agarwal - AAP
Sanjay Kapoor– Congress
Budhsen Verma– Samajwadi Party
