There are elephants, pigs, rare kind of black panthers, wild dogs, monkeys, deer, mongoose and other fascinating mammals. There are others like sloth bears though odd looking with no upper incisor teeth but have a very long tongue which love to have termites. It is alos wonderful to see and hear the sound of barking deer which makes sounds like a dog as they are usually spotted alone.

The other kinds of rare animals in this sanctuary are: Indian Pangolin which is an amazing ant eating creature and the Malabar giant squirrel or Ratufa India, which is having a small physique like a dog having a body length tail.

Other rarest of rare birds here are: Great pied hornbill, blue throated barbet, peregrine falcon and Malabar pied hornbill, all in the surroundings a forest awash with colour, with a mixture of deciduous and evergreen colored trees which includes bamboo and teak plantations. The fruit bearing trees which provides foods to as many as 196 types of species of birds and some plants are medicinal and have self healing powers. One such medicinal plant which is available here is Kydia Clycina which is termed as the best medicinal plant for muscular aches and pain reliever.

At Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary there are a lot of walking trails which gives an abundant opportunity for photography along with nature walks, bird watching fishing and boating as well as a unique crocodile spotting trip.

The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary covers most of the forest area in the Uttara Kannada district and this was authorized as sanctuary since 1956, and now it is incorporating even the Anshi National park, and thus in total this dense forest area covers around 834 square km. This forest area has an altitude of 100m to 970 m from the sea level and the highest point here at Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is Hegada Temba and here the annual rainfall is from 1,250mm to 5,000mm. There is an easy access of road, rail and moreover convenient bus services.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary - Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit is from March to October and this sanctuary is open between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The state owned forest department provides minibus tours and there are several rest houses within and also camping facilities are provided - one among them is called as Kulgi Nature Camp and most visits here at this camp are educational visits.

Through air the nearest airports are at Belgaum with 110 km distance, Hubli - 75 km and Goa with 150 km. Air Deccan has the arrangements of daily flights from Mumbai and Bangalore to Belgaum, Goa and Hubli.

By train the nearest railway stations are at Alnavar with 32 km away, Londa 48 km, Dharwad 57 km and Hubli 75 km.

Through road it is well connected to Bangalore and even to Mumbai, Goa, Balgaum, Karwar, Dharwad & Hubli, many buses ply from Dandeli to other important place regularly. Pick up and drop facilities are also available on request.

Ganeshgudi, near Dandeli, is the Mecca for bird watchers from South India. The forest in Dandeli is also known for black panthers if one is lucky to sight them.
Jungle lodges, run by Karnataka Government, has the well known 'Old Magazine House' resort that is rustic but more than enough for the serious nature lovers and bird watchers. They have a one day package inclusive of three meals and accommodation, the package includes nature walks or bird sighting walks. One can arrange white water rafting if needed at extra cost.
