Charminar consists of four tall minarets and a mosque on the top floor. Charminar is built upon four grand arches in different directions with elegant minaretes and spiral staircases. Charminar is referred to as "The Arc de triomphe of the East", and gets its name from its four elegantly designed minaretes. Charminar has a design which is based upon Shia "tazias" which were erected in honour of Hussain the son in law of Prophet Mohammad. The Charminar is built of granite and lime mortar and it stands on a base and opens up in four different directions with majestic arches. Each arch has a length of 20 mts. and a width of 11 mts. All the arches have clock on their upper parts which were erected on 1889.

Charminar

History of Charminar

The history of Charminar is as charming as the structure and architecture itself. Charminar was built in the year of 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah a little after he shifted his capital from Golconda to Hyderabad. Anecdotes say that Hyderabad city was under the influence of epidemic of plague. Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah prayed to Almighty for the end of the epidemic. At last when his prayers were answered and the city recovered from the epidemic he built Charminar to commemorate the elimination of a plague epidemic from this city.

This beautiful and majestic structure of classic architecture is built of granite, lime, mortar and, some say, pulverized marble etc. At one time Charminar was right at the heart of Hyderabad city and one could easily get a glimpse of the busy Hyderabad city from its four arches. Ancient story also indicate about a tunnel constructed to connect Hyderabad city and the palace at Golconda. Possibly this was an intended escape route in the event of a war.
