Coaching after 12th: A need or a trend?

This article describes about whether coaching is required after 12th standard or is it a trend in the status.

If we look into the present educational awareness among the common citizens of the nation like India, there has been a tremendous increase as compared to the past years. Every parent has become very vigilant in order to provide best educational facilities to their children so that they can do well in their academics and get a better job in future. In fact it is great to hear that as our nation is progressing.

When a student is out with his 12th results, the next worry that lingers in the minds of the parents is to have the best engineering or medical colleges for their students to pursue higher education. As a result, they consider coaching for various entrance examinations like IIT, AIEEE, CPMT etc. Best for their children. Nowadays, we can see thousands of coaching centres throughout India and all promising the best coaching facility in the various newspaper advertisements, pamphlets and hoardings. A decade ago, coaching institutions in India were few and imparted quality education. But if we look into the present scenario, coaching institutes have mere become money earning shops.

Parents spend thousands of bucks on their children thinking they will get the best from coaching centres and if we look into the condition of most of the coaching centre, there are bulk of students in each class, syllabus is covered up in a hurry, faculty frequently changes etc. Can a student really benefit from coaching if such conditions prevails. If after coaching, the student fails to get a good college, it is the student who has to feel little ashamed.

My personal opinion is that self study and study at school is more than enough. If one has to really prepare for IIT's and all. Give a drop for 1 year and sit at home and do self study. In stead of coaching and going to distant places, purchase good competitive books and have a thorough knowledge of them. Mostly when students go out for coaching, a lot of time is wasted in knowing the new city, going to the coaching centres, coming back to the PG's, worrying that food will be good or not etc. While staying and studying at home saves lot of time. One has to just focus on studies and rest is all managed by parents. Coaching has today just become a trend not a need. Students often feel that their fellow peers are joining coaching institutes why should not they do and as a result they force their parents.

Coaching is also a need today because it gives us a sense of right direction which we need to lead in order to clear a specific exam. Generally the subjects that are taught in schools/colleges are according to the curriculum and not according to the competitive exam.
Coaching can help a child move in the right direction.

Self-study is good for a student who can work hard and learn on his own. Today we can find many students who are not willing to work hard rather they opt to go a coaching institute where everything is provided to them.
