A unique reality show based on the developmental activities

Reality shows are there in all channels. But a unique one was broadcast by Door-darsan Thiruvananthapuram Kendra. It was a contest about the developmental activities carried out in various Panchayaths in Kerala.

Door-darsan Thiruvananthapuram Kendra has just completed a Reality show which is a unique one with a social content. It was a Reality show in which the Local Self Governments (LSG) of Kerala participated as the contestants and the items presented were the developmental activities they have done during the last four years. These presentations were evaluated by subject experts, social activists, journalists and other popular personalities.

There are 978 Grama Panchayaths, 59 Municipalities and 5 Corporations in Kerala. Due to decentralization policies of the State the Local Self Governments get funds based on different developmental projects. These projects are prepared by each Panchayath at their level with people's participation. Naturally, the projects will have local importance and local touch. The project will be aimed at the maximum utilization of the resources available in the particular locality.

In the Reality show 152 LSG's participated. These LSGs submitted a summary of the developmental activities carried out in their respective areas as a response to a detailed proforma handed over to them. Together with that each one of them prepared a short video (five minutes duration) showing the real physical results. Further these LSGs were invited to present on their developmental activities in front of an expert panel of judges. The judges sought clarifications on various points in the proforma submitted by them and also gave advises which would help them to improve their future developmental activities. Based on these these LSGs were assessed and the top fifteen were selected.

A final assessment was done by the experts by visiting and inspecting the sites of these 15 LSGs. Also they held sittings and discussions with the members of Panchayaths, officials and the local people. At the end the best three among the Panchayaths and Municipalities, based on their developmental works during the last four years, were selected.

The three Grama Panchayaths which were chosen as the first, second and third were, respectively, Elappully (Palakkad District), Akathethara (Palakkad District) and Adaat (Thrissur District) Grama Panchayaths. In the case of Municipalities Ottapalam (Palakkad District) and Malappuram Municipalities came first and second, respectively.

The topper, Elappully was selected based on their successful venture in milk production and interventions in the agriculture field. In this venture nine co-operative societies jointly produced 36.5 lakh liters of milk, which resulted in an income of Rs. 7.5 crores. The Panchayath now produces around 7,800 liters of milk every day. Being chosen as the first this Panchayath gets an award of one crore rupees as prize money. The second and third rak holders will get, respectively, Rs. 50 lakh and Rs.25 lakh. The Municipalities which won the first and second positions are to get Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh respectively.

This Social Reality Show, a unique in the history of Indian Television Channels, was organized by Door-darshan jointly with Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), Govt. of Kerala and sponsored by Suchithwa Mission. This programme has earned praise and appreciation of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting for being an excellent example of Developmental Journalism
