Good Sleep is the Key to Good Health

A pleasant sleep is the foundation for a good health. Although there is no real yardstick to measure how much a person needs to sleep, 7-8 hours of sleep in a day is sufficient enough for an average adult.

While getting a deep sleep signifies good health, sleeping too much or too less could be harmful for health. Those who are not able to sleep properly remain mentally and physically stressed. They get irritated very easily. Remaining sleepless for a long time could also lead to depression and the patient could also develop suicidal tendencies. On the other hand, good sleep provides relaxation to the entire body and keeps you energetic while bringing you a feeling of freshness also. Good sleep also results in proper development of the body organs.

Reasons for Sleeplessness:

1. Irregular daily routine – This disturbs the proper functioning of the body due to which sleep is also disturbed.

2. Time and type of Dinner – The time and type of dinner you have also affects your sleep. Dinner should be had at least 2-3 hours before going to sleep. Also dinner should not be too heavy.

3. Addiction – Addiction to drugs, alcohol or sleeping pills affects our sleep.

4. Stress – Stress, be it due to job or any other reasons, brings about hormonal imbalances in our body which in turn disturbs our sleeping pattern.

5. Watching TV or working on the computer for too late in the night delays our sleep. All these activities should be over at least 2 hours before you go to bed.

Tips for getting Good Sleep:

1. Be regular to go to bed and wake up. Maintain proper routine even if it is a holiday. This will ensure high energy and freshness in the body.

2. Make your lifestyle systematic. Ensure proper timings for food, exercise and sleep and make it a habit to follow it on a regular basis.

3. If you are under medication, make sure that you have your food and medicines on time. This is very important for your health.

4. Plan your next day in advance before going to sleep so that you go to sleep with a relaxed mind, without having to think or worry about your next day activities.

5. Maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness in your bedroom and bed should be made regularly so that it brings a good feeling when you enter your room. Ensure that your mattress and pillow are comfortable; else this could affect your sleep.

6. Do not drink too much fluids or water just before going to sleep. This could result in waking up frequently to visit the toilet.

7. Avoid tea, coffee or cool drinks before going to sleep. These contain chemicals which affect sleep.

8. You can also meditate. This is the best way to switch from a conscious state to an unconscious state. But this should be done only after undergoing proper training from a well-trained teacher.
