Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Tourist place in Kannur, Kerala


Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful sanctuary in Kerala. It is located at Kannur district.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful place in Kerala. It is located at Kannur. Aralam is covered with tropical and semi evergreen forest and it is the home place for many animals and plants. The sanctuary have a total area of 55 sq km. The sanctuary was established in 1984 with headquarter near Irutty.

The sanctuary shares boundary with Karnataka at north and Wayanad district at east. Internally Aralam is divided into Narikkadavu section, Aralam Section and Chavachi Section. The highest peak here is Katti Betta having a height of 1145 m from sea level. Aaralam farm is one of the major hybrid coconut production centre in the country.

Cheenkannipuzha is the main water source of the forest. Lakes consist of large rocks and stones where visitors usually rests. The river banks are very attractive which contains small and big stones in various colors.

Birds in the Sanctuary

The main attraction of the forest is the existence of large variety of birds. The forest is the main center for photographers and bird lovers. According to the survey of 2008 there are a total of 214 species of birds are found in forest. Out of this twelve are endemic to western Ghats and eight are globally threatened birds. Globally threatened birds are Pallid Harrier, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Wynad Laughingthrush, Grey breasted Laughingthrush, Black and Orange Flycatcher and Nilgiri Flycatcher.

Mammals in the sanctuary

A total of 23 species of mammals are found here. Main attractions are Indian elephant, tiger, leopard, deers and squirrels. Squirrels can be seen in the entry of the forest itself. Malabar giant squirrel, the three striped palm squirrel and large brown flying squirrel are found here. In the evening elephants comes as a large group on the shores of river is really attractive to watch. Herds of deers is another important attraction here. The Sambar deer, The Barking deer and The Mouse deer are found here. Main predators are tiger and leopard.

Reptiles, Amphibians and Fishes in the Sanctuary

A total of 22 reptiles are found here. Out of this nine of them are snakes. Python and King cobra are found here.

A total of 23 amphibians are found here. Four are endemic to Western Ghats. They are Micrixalus nudis, Rana curtipes, Philautus pulcherrimus and Rhacophorus malabaricus.

The Aralam wildlife sanctuary have a lots or rivers, streams and lakes within its area. Therefore a wide variety of fishes are found here. Thirty nine species of fishes are found here.

Way to Aralam



The nearest railway station is Thalassery, which is the one of the major and oldest railway station in Kannur. Majority of the trains have stops in this railway station. The station is located at 70 Km from Aralam.

The nearest airport is Kozhikode International airport which is one of the growing airport in Kerala. It is 150 Km away from Aralam. The new airport which is expected to start in few years in Kannur will be only few kilometers from Aralam which may cause the increase of tourists from foreign countries.
