Management cannot be envisaged as a recently developed phenomenon. It has taken roots a long time ago even as man began living in society. As people understood the need for coordination and cooperation which would be more benificial than mere individualism, the need for proper management arose. Though it was not at the scale we see today in our daily lives, it surely had the very common traits of management. As society grew larger and various groups arised, the scope of mangament also rose, it complexity deepened and its need for management become almost inevitable. As we can see today, every organisation, without exception, has a management, be it in its primitive levels. In the modern sense, management has become so complex that management courses are being meted out and it has become very essential to a manager in order to get the basics right and build on what he or she has learnt in such management courses. Not only has this stream of management become necessary, but nowadays we see a mad rush of aspirants who wish to complete the management courses like MBA, BBA in the most coveted institutions. But the main objective should be to apply all that has been learnt and couple it with the experience and good reasoning ot eventually pan out as a reliable manager.

Management as an entity, is very important for a country to develop and flourish. According to Peter Drucker, who is widely known as the 'Father of Modern Management', there are no underdeveloped countries in this world, but there are only undermanaged countries. This statement is very relevant if we look at the factors involving the progress of a country. Most likely in a underdeveloped or developing country, resources might be in scanty proportions, but through proper management of these resources, the end result can be made sweet. For this very reason it is management which more often than not spells success for a country. There has been necessitated a need for leaders to direct these third world nations onto moulding them into a developed nation. Management as a whole is not just confined to the societal avenues like businesses, government enteprises, health, transport structures etc., but it also is applicable in our household atmosphere. The parents are responsible for managing the day to day issues in the household for ultimately leading a peaceful life. Hence it can substantially stated that management can be inevitably found in all walks of life.

Definition of Management

Management is a process by which resources, including labour, capital, equipment, are utilised in a efficient manner in order to achieve some predetermined goals and objectives.

Characteristics of Management

  1. Management is a societal process:
    Society at large cannot function progressively if not for management of the various societal entities. Society comprises of men and the environment he creates around him. Therefore management in society involves managing people and their various traits such as behaviour, background, emotions, customs and numerous other aspects. Management is resposible to create a sense of satisfaction in society. A proper management can ensure a prosperous society. At the workplace, management deals with motivating and helping the workforce develop both intellectually and morally.

  2. Management is objective oriented:
    In any field, however diverse, where management is applied, the primary purpose is for the achievement of a particular objective or goal. Management without a goal is meaningless. In fact all efforts involved in any management system is solely in order to achieve the primary goal of an organisation. The very measure of an organisation's management is how efficiently and effectively has the objectives of an organisation has been achieved. Effective means to what extent a goal has been achieved and efficient means how optimally have the resources been utilised.

  3. Management depends on diverse disciplines:
    What sets succesful managers apart from their contemporaries are how much they derive information from various disciplines and implement them in their day to day managing activities. Such disciplines include psychology, sociology etc. These disciplines are required so that managers get acclimitised with the way the human brain behaves and responds to various situations. This is particularly important when it comes to motivating the workforce in completing a particular task which without proper direction and motivation from a manager, the employees would be pretty lethargic to complete.

  4. Management is a coordinating effort:
    Many a time within an organisation we find a variety of departments which handle different facets of the organisation. These departments though fulfil their individual goals, ultimately they end up serving the main purpose of fulfilling the organisation's goal. In this sense, management is responsible for unifying all such efforts within an organisation and thus coordinating the efforts of various individuals within an organisation. Moreover, the manager should take utmost care that overlapping is effectively avoided and that no task is performed more than once by different personnel. In an other perspective and definitely should be taken under consideration is that management works as coordinating force between man and physical resources.

  5. Management is a universal and transcedental process:
    In any precinct be it commercial, religious, political, entertainment or bureaucracy, management is prevalent. In fact in any organisation which has an aim to fulfil a few predetermined objectives through the joint efforts of a workforce, management becomes necessary. This proves to us that management is truly universal and transcedental in the sense that it finds its inclusion in almost all walks of life. Infact, no organisation can work without a management however primitive in nature it might be. An organisation without a management loses its meaning.

  6. Management is progressive:
    Progressiveness is characterised by its lack of discontinuity. Likewise when we state that management is a progressive process, we may be rest assured that there is virtually no end to management. Management is a continuous, dynamic process in this perspective. The management cycle is operable as long as there is a set of objectives and goals still waiting to be achieved. So it can be envisaged that management as a quintessence is a sojourn and not a destination. It is essentially an on-going progressive process.

  7. Management is a profession:
    As mentioned earlier there are many courses available both in India and abroad that help an individual learn the vital basics that are inevitable to be studied before experience and sound reasoning sets in. All these streams prepare the individual with proper market behaviour, financial issues and human traits amongst a variant syllabus. As a result of mastering these disciplines, the individual can look forward to management as an earning option. In fact, management jobs have become the most sought after ones as they inevitably find their way through all sorts of organisations. This creates the need for a rounded manager and highly proficient personnel.

  8. Management is a creative process:
    Creativity creeps into management activities as in todays world, competition is cut-throat and the finer details such as creativeness helps keep an organisation afloat. As a manager speaks for his organisation and is also responsible for innovativeness within the organisation, he carries with him an air of creativity and uniqueness in his work. This particularly helps in an organisation creating a niche for itself in the marketplace, thus separating it out from its nearest competitors. The methods which a manager employs also has a particular creativity and uniqueness attached to it.

  9. Management is abstract and intangible:
    Management cannot be measured in normal standards and hence is described as being abstract and intangible. It is more like a force that is both unseen and not precisely explainable. But its presence can be felt in its effectiveness and efficiency i.e how far a path has management come in fulfilling an objective or goal. So the end results such as employee satisafaction and consumer satisfaction define the success of a management. Since these features are immeasureable, management can indeed be envisaged as an intangible process.

  10. Management is decision making:
    Management as a preoccupation is a decision making body. In every stage of a task till the very completion stage, a manager continuously has to be on a decision making role. Management is essentially decision making. During the planning phase a variety of decisions have to be taken when choosing among different alternatives. Even after the planning phase is completed, decision making does take form in simple day-to-day activities of the organisation. Also very important is the role of decision making when a problem arises, or when things don't go according to plan.
