What is the Oscar Award?: The 13½" 8½ pounds golden statuette is the most coveted award in the motion picture industry, awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It is officially known as the Academy Award of Merit. First conceived by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) art director Cedric Gibbons and sculpted by Los Angeles sculptor George Stanley, the Oscar statuette depicts a knight standing on a reel of film firmly holding the hilt of a sword. The film reel at the base of the statuette has 5 spokes, each representing the 5 original branches of the Academy: producers, directors, actors, writers and technicians.
