Adverbs And How To Use Them Correctly


An Adverb is a verb which adds to the meaning of a verb.It is used to modify a verb,an adjective or another adverb.In this essay, I am going to discuss various functions of adverbs.

Adverbs add to the meaning of a verb and tells us when,where and how an action is done. Please learn the following to identify and use the adverbs correctly:

1.Adverbs generally end with the suffix 'ly'. For Example: Sweetly, quickly, wonderfully etc. The boy boarded the bus quickly. The building is constructed wonderfully.

2.However, some adverbs don't end with the suffix '-ly'. For example: sometimes, always,here, there, etc. I attend parties sometimes. Please wait there.

3.An adverb may modify verbs,adjectives, adverbs,phrases, clauses or even a whole sentence.

Examples:
1. Lata sings sweetly. Here 'sings' is a verb and 'sweetly, is an adverb which modifies the verb 'sings'. 'Sweetly' answers the question 'how'or the manner in which an action is done. Such an Adverb is called an Adverb of Manner.

Some Adverbs of similar nature are fast, loudly, happily, foolishly.

2.I have seen you somewhere. God is everywhere. Somewhere,everywhere answer the question 'where'. They are called Adverbs of Place.They answer the question'where?'

Some more examples of Adverbs of place:Inside, here, there,forward, outside.

3.Please meet me tomorrow. I went to the market yesterday. Tomorrow and yesterday are called Adverbs of Time.They answer the question' when?'

Some more Adverbs of Time: immediately, currently, presently, daily, early, late.

4. I go the temple sometimes. My friend meets me very often. Tom comes to the party always late. The words 'sometimes',often','always' are Adverbs of frequency. They answer the question 'How often'

Some more examples of Adverbs of frequency:never, seldom, twice,several times,frequently,again.

5. How many mistakes did you make? When did the movie begin? Why is Mary late?
These are Interrogative Adverbs. Where,why, when,how are used for asking questions which show more action .

6. Mary is very pretty. The child is quite healthy. The class was nearly full.
'very','quite','nearly' are Adverbs of Degree because they add something more to the meanings.They show how much or to what extent something is done.

Some more examples of Adverbs of Degree: fairly, absolutely, fairly, extremely.
