It was told in puranas and History as the demon kings were ruled the area through Bairava Upasana and the puzhal Fort has bronze doors and Coral Pillers.

The defeated king Thondaiman, on frustration, went on wandering and on his way the legs of his elephant was sorrounded with the jasminum creepers (Mullai kodi in Tamil). He got down and cut off the creepers with his sword but he found bloodshed on the creepers. Astonished king started digging the ground and find a beautiful sivalinga there and with shivering he apologise the Lord with full heartedly. As satisfied with his prayer Lord Shiva sent his Nandiamperumal as his aid and with this aid the king again fought with the demon kings and succeeded. On return the king built a huge temple for Lord shiva on the place where he found the Shivalinga. He kept the white madar (vellai erukku) Pillars in the entrance of shrine. We can see them even today in the temple.
