Stevia a boon in modern life for human being

Human beings are God's greatest creation. Its all round development gets stunted more by unhealthy body than by lack of education and poverty. In order to remain healthy or to be free from the cycle of diseases, we have to take shelters of exercises, diets, or medicines. Today, in our country, several diseases are spreading its deadly tentacles killing many in great numbers. If we could include some greens and leaf in our meals, then these provide apart from its medicinal effects, freshness in tastes too. The figure of diabetic patients in India was 5.7 crores in 2008 which has reached to an alarming position now 2011 making children of small age group as its victim. Journey by stevia from its origin of Paraguay to the other parts of the world

Stevia is originally a plant of Paraguay of South America. After Paraguay, its expansion reached to Taiwan, America, Brazil, Japan, China and South East Asian countries. About 80% of agriculture of stevia is done in China and Japan is its greatest market. At present, in India, cultivation of stevia has already been started in many states, names of which have already been given above.

Biological speciality of stevia

Dr Hewitt D Fletcher, an American scientist had first of all had extracted a compound known as stivioside from the stevia leaves and the Japanese placed the usefulness of this compound to the knowledge of the world. This compound activates the beta cells of pancreas and helps them prepare insulin. For this reason it is proving as Ramban (Saviour) to the patients of diabetic. In the leaves of stevia, the quantity of stevioside is between 6-20% which 200-300 times sweeter than the sucrose. Whereas, the leaves of stevia is20-30 times sweeter than general sugar and completely bereft of calorie. In addition to stevioside, there are boudish, rivaudiside-C, ducoside are also present in stevia including 6 other compounds which play important roles in skin cancer, candisisis, tooth paste, filling up of wounds and controlling the blood pressure.

Conduciveness of weather and environs for its growth in India

Stevia in India is comparatively new plant for agriculture. It can be easily grown in Shivalik range and planes of Himalayas and frigid planes of middle India. This plant cannot tolerate either more heat or more cold (either below 10 degree centigrade or above 10 degree C. Therefore it is beneficial to do its sowing it in the middle of maize or ratanjot (jetropha) plants to save it from heat. It gives better yields of harvests under the condition of between 100-140 cm of rains and 65-85 % of humidity. The speciality of stevia plant is that its growth is not stunted by frost falls. The red soil of 6-7.5PH value is ideal for its rich growth.

The ever successive species of stevia plant

There are about 70 species of stevia plant that have been developed the world over. But while selecting plant, we should choose such species in which the percentage of steviosides is the most and which is conducive and suitable to the local environs and climate. As of these moments, there are chiefly three types of species which are scientifically deemed to be apt for cultivation.

  • S.R.B. 128- scientifically, it is considered to be the best spacey of stevia. About 21% glucosides are found in it. This spacey is quite appropriate to be grown in entire region of Indian Territory. This spacey has been developed by Sun Fruits Ltd, Pune.
  • S.R.B. 512- In this variety, glucosides are found in the proportion from 9-12%. This variety is suited most to the northern part of our country and four cutting of harvesting could be undertaken in a year.
  • SRB 123- 9-12% of glucosides are found in this spacey and suited to the southern planes to the country. Five cuttings could be taken of this variety in a year.


Just as for supply of sugar in the present, there are cane-sugar mills established, there would be mills for processing the stevia plants also similar to for what it is for sugar in future, and our farmers brethren would earn a hefty income by supplying stevia plant to the mills around their areas. The patients of diabetics meanwhile can fetch stevia from aryuvedic shops and establishments located around their area.
