Women top merit list in results of civil services examination Oct-Nov 2010


The article deals with the results of the preliminary civil services examination held in May 2010 & the Main Civil Services Exam held in Oct-Nov 2010 declared on May 11, 2011. The results highlight the achievement of two women candidates in the merit list who created a history. The analysis of the preliminary civil services examination is given and the number of vacancies in various civil services is also announced.

Two women top merit list of the civil services examination


Women are never behind men. It has been proved once again by the two women topping the merit list of the preliminary examination of the civil services examination held in May 2010 and the main examination held in October-November, 2010 whose results were declared on May 11, 2011. The toppers are S. Divyadharshini of Dr Ambedkar Law University in Chennai and Sweta Mohanty, a B Tech in computer science from Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology (GRIET), Hyderabad. There are five women in the top 25 from among 717 men and 203 women who came out successfully in the examination. The examination is for entry into the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) and several other Central services.

Analysis of result of the civil services examination Oct-Nov 2010


The history has been created by the two toppers in the prestigious civil services examination. This shows that women of our country never lack behind their male counterparts. From among the boys, it is R V Varun Kumar of Chennai's Ragas Dental College who stood third in the examination. A total number of 547,698 candidates appeared in the preliminary examination for civil services held for induction in the prestigious civil services in the country for which the Main civil services examination was conducted in October-November 2010. Candidates with the engineering background had surpassed the others in the examination of the civil services. The results shows that there 15 engineering candidates out of the merit list of the top 25. The 5 candidates are the medicine students. Out of the top 25, 8 had made this grade in their very first attempt. 4 candidates which include the topper S. Divyadharshini achieved the position in their second attempt. There are 9 candidates including the second and third rankers who have made it in their third attempt. The examining body has withheld the result of the two candidates and the candidature of 39 candidates has been declared as provisional. This is pertinent to note that among the aspirants for the top civil services in the country, there are 28 physically challenged candidates, 14 are orthopaedically challenged, 5 are visually impaired and 9 are hearing impaired. The number of scheduled caste candidates who are successful are 148, the scheduled tribes candidates are 74 and other backward classes candidates are 270.

It is reported that a record number of 55 candidates from Andhra Pradesh have come out successfully in the Civil Services Examination 2010. Among them, Sweta Mohanty is ranked 2, RV Varun Kumar is ranked 3 and KVN Chakradhar is ranked 5. Several candidates who have qualified for entry into the all India civil services are the children of former and serving civil servants. There are as many as 17 candidates form Andhra Pradesh whose names appear among the top 100 and if we take the top 500, there are 50 candidates from Andhra Pradesh. This shows how advanced Andhra Pradesh is in the field of education. The 18th rank holder in the All India Civil Services Examination is the son of a cook working at the BC social welfare hostel Siddavatam in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. This is an example of hard work by a student from a poor family to show that the status of a candidate cannot stand in the way of his / her ambition. He had told his mother that he would come within the top 20 and he has proved it. Among the top 25 candidates who qualified for the civil services examination 20 are men and 5 are women. The Chennai girl Ms Divyadarshini who secured the first rank in the results is a BA, BL (Hons) who cleared the examination in her second attempt. Ms Divyadarshini said, "I was expecting some result but not as a topper." and added that her result was a year's tedious exercise and hard work coupled with luck.

Vacancies in the Civil Services


The vacancies announced by the government in various civil services are 151 in the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), 35 in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and 150 in the Indian Police Service (IPS). There are 242 candidates kept in the consolidated reserve list.

The list of the successful candidates can be accessed on the websites of Press Information Bureau and Union Public Service Commission. The website of PIB is www.pib.nic.in and the website of the UPSC is www.upsc.gov.in. The marks of the successful candidates are likely to be published within a fortnight.
