Common mistakes to avoid when submitting a Resource article at ISC

How to put in a good title? How to write a summary? You will get answers to these and other questions in this article. This article gives detailed information on the do's and dont's of presenting resource articles at India Study Channel.

It is possible that you have read the requisite posting guidelines & have checked out how other members have posted before posting in the Resource section. To your surprise (and I am sure annoyance!), you find that your post has either been moved to pending status or has been rejected.

To prevent this from happening, avoid these common errors made by many members, both new and established contributors:-

Title of Resource
1. Never put a URL in the title – not even when contributing to the category of useful websites.
2. Don't put in bullets & symbols like these: * | ~
3. Don't put in multiple keywords in the title. It will be considered as spamming.
Refer: Important guidelines for using keywords
4. Do not put entire title in all capital letters. Even the first letter of all the words should not be in capital letters.
Example:-
Incorrect: 2011 MAHALAXMI MEDICAL COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND HOW TO APPLY
Incorrect: 2011 Mahalaxmi Medical College Admissions And How to Apply
Correct: 2011 Mahalaxmi Medical College admissions and how to apply

Summary of Resource
The above guidelines apply for the summary box too. In addition:
1. Don't put in just individual words or even keywords. Put in proper 2-3 coherent sentences.
2. It is best to avoid putting in the summary box the exact same text as the first introductory paragraph of your article; re-phrase it in a different manner.
3. Please remember to put the first letter of each sentence in a capital letter & avoid short forms of words.
Incorrect: in this article i will give you information abt
Correct: In this article I will give you information about

Text of the Resource
1. Do not use excessive number of keywords.
2. Do not put too many words in bold.
3. Never put an entire paragraph in bold.
4. It is a good idea to leave a space (hit the space bar on the keyboard just once) between information which is given in points if that information is a bit lengthy, say exceeding 3 lines. This prevents close clustering of the points and gives the article a neat look.
5. Never put too many images in a text. Readers want information; they are neither interested in pictures nor wish to keep scrolling downwards to get to the information.
6. Never use over-sized images. Download on your computer some free picture-resize software and use it to resize the image to a reasonable size.
7. For uniformity, ISC has already put in a default font, font size & font colour. Do not play around with this and use HTML tags to change these default features.
8. Never put in an extra lengthy sentence by separating words with commas, colons & semi-colons. I sometimes see members putting in a sentence which runs the length of an entire paragraph with no end in sight! Basic rule: read the sentence to yourself – if you run out of breadth before you reach the end, it is too long!
9. Try not to post an excessively lengthy article. If it is on a topic which has a lot of aspects to it, what you can do is to break it up into 2 or 3 resources. Example: If you are writing about a mobile phone, you can post it as multiple resources – features and technical specifications of XYZ; where to buy XYZ; XYZ review; etc.
10. Never begin the text with "Hi", "Hello friends", or similar salutations. Similarly, never end the text with "'Bye!", "Regards", "Thanks", etc. You are not in a chat scenario!
11. Always check and double check for spelling and grammar mistakes. We are not looking for 100% perfect English, but at least 90% of the post should have good English. A few very common spelling errors I have seen:

  • The word message is written as massage
  • The word career is written as carrier
  • The word lose is used instead of loose (and vice-versa)

  • If you wish to clarify any of the above points or have any query about how to post a Resource, please post it in this thread. Even if you have a dozen queries, no problem! It is better to clear you doubts and post correctly rather than have your hard work going down the drain.

    Hello Vandana Madam,

This is useful information for the writers of articles in the resources section. I usually put 4 to 6 images to explain about how to make power point slides which are necessary for explanations for the powerpoint slides. If you have gone through some of them, please advise if they are alright or I still need to reduce their size. The link of one of such articles is given below:

Thanks Vandana Madam for bringing out these vulnerable and common mistakes in the forum. While writing most of US get in such a flow that mostly we skip these kind of key fundamentals.
Your forums and posts has been a inspiration for me.
Thank you for helping us all.

Author: Vandana01 Jun 2011 Member Level: Platinum   Points : 3

@ Sukhdevji: your use of multiple images is perfectly valid as it is a tool used to explain your text clearly, namely how to effectively use slides to enhance interest in what is being taught. Each image which you used is connected directly to the point being explained.

I also feel that since each image is of a Power Point slide, it is Ok to keep it as a large image instead of re-sizing it to a smaller one wherein the mathematical digits may not be visible.

    Hello,
I have also done several mistakes while posting resources. My mistake was that I had posted some material that was already there on the internet i.e. I have reproduced the same content on ISC. But not all were copied pasted materials, some were my own articles. I will not make this mistake again.

Author: Vandana09 Jun 2011 Member Level: Platinum   Points : 2

@ Sagar: No, you cannot copy content from your site to ISC. Any content at ISC should not appear at any other site. What you can do is post the content first at ISC, then post a similar article at your site in a different manner & give the link to the ISC post in that article.

Author: naveen raathiran12 Oct 2011 Member Level: Silver   Points : 1

    Hi Vandana,

Really a food for thought kinda thing to be known for sure before presenting any resource to ISC. Good that I read the same before submitting my own article. We members do expect this kind of articles to know our ISC better and to stop un-intentional mistakes which may lead to the cancellation of membership itself. No worry if it could have been a loss of a member but it is the loss of knowledge, once lost hard to get again.

If you dont mind how we could make link words like what you have used in the above paragraphs like - 'important guidelines for key words' and 'posting guidelines'

Author: Vandana12 Oct 2011 Member Level: Platinum   Points : 1

@ Naveen: To give links to words, you need to use HTML tag. This is how:
    First type this: {[<]}A HREF=" "

Then put the URL link of the post which you wish to connect in between "".

    Then immediately after closing the link (after {[>]}) without any space put the words (e.g.posting guidelines). Then close with {[<]}/a{[>]}

    Remove the [ and { brackets .

Author: Veena Sharma22 Nov 2011 Member Level: Gold   Points : 2

Your article is very useful for me, as I am new and don't know all the keys to unlock this site.I really appreciate your help, but one thing really make me wonder.
Suppose I am writing a resource, in that i'm writing a heading and then starting that paragraph, and I'm doing that heading with html tag of H2, then am I suppose to leave a line to start my paragraph, if yes then how many lines should be left?

Author: Vandana22 Nov 2011 Member Level: Platinum   Points : 2

@ Veena: When you put in the h2 tag for the heading, you don't need to leave an lines to start the paragraph. There is automatically a space of 1 line immediately after that heading.

For smaller sub-headings within a main heading you can use the h3 tag. For example, let's say you put the heading for a scholarship post as 'Eligibility requirements'. Then, with h3 tags, you can put in smaller sub-headings 'Age', 'Educational qualifications', 'Professional experience' or whatever other criteria is necessary to apply for the scholarship.

These guidelines are really needed by each and every person who is writing on ISC or anywhere else. To make our opinion clear to the other person, we should try to make out content clear and effective. After writing the correct matter over screen, we need to work for making our presentation more better and effective. In that case, these HTML codes are very much helpful to everyone.

One can use these codes to give an 'italics' style to their font, other can use them for referring a link to other article or matter by using 'href' code or for highlighting or making a Heading for their matter.

In Every way these are helpful for us. If our posts or comments will be more effective and clear to everyone, then we can get more attraction of everyone and can share more with more people.

I really appreciate your work in this article. It is really a very useful article to all the new members and also for some experienced members too.

The points which you have mentioned are really relevant when you submit an article in the resources section. The title and summary really plays a very important role in any articles and also the text in the articles should be such that it gives you good search result also.

And will also mention that even the tags are really very important when it comes to search engine so that your article is showing up in the very first page of the search itself

    Dear Vandana,

Your post is extremely helpful for a beginner for me. However, ther are some pitfalls which if I get answers from, it would be really helpful. First of all, the screen is shaky ! The reason being the left column, where you are posting the gifts and weekly prizes for the winners. It is problem with the site, which you need to get corrected with the web designer as soon as possible, since such shaky reading will affect eyes of people who are really very much interested to read on your site.

Secondly, I am trying to reach anyone who is genuinely helpful on phone. I found Mr. timmy's no. but it is not working. Kindly share a suitable number to respond.

Thirdly, I am a Homeopathic dr, and would like to add myself in your 'ask an dexpert" campaign, as I am having a rich experience of 7 yrs in this field, along with Medical underwriting and replying to queries of online patients worldwide, lending a helping hand this site will not be a problem !

I have also asked for a help on this site about the Hotels in Khandala and Lonavle, awaiting their replies.

Thanks for being patient and reading all this, my eyes are already shaking, wonder I would not land up in Nystagmus ! Anyways, Thanks !

@ Prashant: there is no keyword software as such. You could read articles posted in our resource section related to SEO skills and use of keywords. Basically, a good title, summary & sub-headings will form your keywords to get traffic.

I suggest that you read the Help Topics related to Content and the ones specifically about keywords:
    1. Using keywords in the title

    2. Putting keywords in bold

    3. Keyword Spamming

The article is self sufficient for the authors attempting to write articles at ISC. I wonder how could I miss the article of such an importance and now I have added it to my favorites at ISC.

I wanted to add from my observation that members sometimes editors too skip while approving, the selection of category as article section is already filled with default category admission and under that B.Ed admission is mistakenly kept as it is for any kind if articles. So far I have found out three and two already informed to members as well as editors and got corrected and one more now I have given in theresponse of one article to correct.

Also since responses has also important place now iI feel members should avoid feedback like discussion in forum which may lost the authors interest.
