Troubleshooting tips for laptops

Many of us might have experienced the problems of low speeds on the laptop, especially while using laptops with an inbuilt celeron processor whose processing speed is comparitively lesser than a core duo or a quadro duo processor. The storage area is also limited in a celeron processor. However, as far as laptops are concerned, the laptop's speed and performance are affected by low free space. Here are ways to increase free space in your laptops, thereby improving its performance.

The first suggestion that i would give is, to check the free space available in your laptop. This can be done my using a powerful system tool called Windows Resource Monitor. This allows users to view hardware and software information in real time. This tool can be used to start/stop/suspend/resume processes and services. Sometimes, you might have noticed that your system gets sluggish, and even when you type, the characters take long to appear on the screen. Such problems can be solved by the Resource Monitor. Such problems may be due to very less free memory.

To do this, one requires to start Resource Monitor. To start resource monitor, In the Start -> Search menu, type in resmon.exe and press Enter.

A window named 'Resource Monitor' appears. Click on the Memory tab. You will see five titles namely 'Hardware Reserved', 'In use', 'Modified', 'Standby' and the 'Free'. The space occupied by each of these is mentioned in terms of Megabytes (MB). If you find the 'Free' memory to be very low, then delete some files, folders and programs. To delete files and folders, you can use Disk cleanup option.

For disk cleanup, do the following:
Right-click the drive on which you wish to perform the disk cleanup.
Select 'Properties', and click on the 'General' tab. Then select diskcleanup. The system now calculates the space that can be freed by you. A list then emerges on the screen that has the following: Temporary Internet Files, Offline Webpages, Microsoft Office Temporary files, etc. Tick the check boxes corresponding to these components, and click on 'OK'. The temporary files and cookies are deleted.

If you still want to be sure that all temporary cookies are deleted, do the following:
Go to your web browser (Internet Explorer/Mozilla Firefox/Google Chrome/Opera, etc.)
Navigate to Tools->Internet Options->General. Then select 'Delete'. This will delete the browsing history and the cookies. This way, you'll get more free space.

To provide for more free space, you can also consider deleting some startup icons, and some shortcuts placed in the desktop. To delete startup icons, do the following:
Right-click on an empty area in the taskbar and select Properties. A window called 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' pops up. Click on the Notification Area, and select 'Customize'. Click on 'Turn off system icons and notifications'. The list of icons that you've placed in the taskbar gets populated. Turn off the ones that you would like to remove.

To free more space by uninstalling a program (software), you can do so by navigating to Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program. Select the programs that you use rarely, or the ones that you never use, and click on uninstall.

Once all this is done, restart Windows Resource Monitor, and check the free space. System problems related to speed and performance will eventually reduce and you will get a speedier system.
