What are the basic principles of diet in relation to yoga and exercises?


It is essentially important to observe some rules in our dietary habits to reap the maximum advantage from doing yoga. This article discusses those rules. If with yoga, the corrective measures in dietary habits are not taken of, one cannot obtain good results out of practicing yogasanas.

So the proverb goes: "As will be the food, so will be the body!" Dietary styles affect accordingly not only on body but on your mind, persona, and thoughts as well. When the talk is of yoga, diet comes to play a vital role in exercises and yogasana. One doesn't stand to gain much if he doesn't give some special attention to his diet by merely practicing yoga and exercise postures. This is why yoga expert give special stress on diets pertaining to exercises and yoga practices.

Ist principle of diet


Eat righteous and plain foods. Righteous means fruits and vegetables with the minimal of spices and oil. This meal is wholly vegetarian. As per yoga- shastra, food has been divided into three different parts in accordance with its methods of cooking and preparations. The modern meals are divided into 5-7 categories according to the nutritional vlues.
  1. Rajasic,
  2. Satvic,
  3. Tamasic,

Rajsic: Rajasic meals are those meals which are fried and roasted and dipped deep into spicy curry, juicy and sappy for example sweetmeats are served with different dry fruits. Rajasi meals are stodgy and filling which destructs the digestive system.
Tmasi: Tamasi i.e. fried up and wholly covered with pungent spices and chillies. Virulence comes into a person eating such foods.

As per yoga rules, rajasi and tamasi meals should be eaten to the minimal if benefits from treatment are intended to be gained.

2nd principle of diet


Take balanced diet. According to this principle, one should always eat half of what he feels his stomach demands and the rest half should be filled with air and water. Digestion power strengthens from this. The muscles of the stomach weaken by excessive eating. It is always good to eat less. The problem of obesity and fat deposition do not crop up by eating less. One feels always alert and elastic. Physical capacity to work augments.

Third principle of diet


Foods should be eaten properly by chewing. Eating slowly makes you feel your stomach is full because this filling message takes some time to be posted on to your mind reaching late by the time you are still gobbling up. Eating in a slower pace will make you feel satiated with the lesser quantity of food. The food thus eaten is well digested. The digestive system feels no exertion. One should drink water with meals. You can drink ½ an hour earlier before taking your meals or 1 hour later after the meals.

4rth principle of diet


Take meals three times a day. Take the morning breakfast (fruits, milk), noon meal and night meal. The person practicing yoga-exercises should take their noon time meals a bit earlier that are during the evening times. We should take meal during night two hours before sleeping.

Other dietary relating points during the yoga-exercises


Yoga in empty stomach only: Do yoga empty stomach in the morning. This is the best time for yogabhyash. Drink one glass of hot water and plain water during the summers in the morning. This brings good effects on the digestive system and the decay or disorders are removed. Don't do exercise till 4 hours after taking heavy meals and yogavyash till 2 hours after taking light breakfast.

When to eat


Eat after 30 minutes of finishing yogavyash. If you want to reduce weight, don't eat until 1 hour of eating time. You can take the drink of a glass of lemon juice and honey in warm water. Do not drink water immediately after exercise.

Abstain from tea


One should not drink tea after doing asanas. Around 50 glands of the delicate glands of liver etc weaken by drinking tea once. You can just imagine how much harms are being caused to our body system by our incessant drinking of tea. Acidity, bile, gas and constipation are caused by tea.

Conclusion: WE should sit on Vajrasana immediately after taking our meals. This is the only asana in the yoga-shastra which is done immediately after the meals. This should be done for 15-20 minutes. This relieves from constipation, indigestion, acidity, gas, bile etc.
