Lord Hayagreeva Jayanthi


In Hindu spirituality there are many God and Goddess are worshipped for special skills. Lord Ganesh is meant for all success and He is worshipped first in all occasions for removing any hurdles in the effort taken by us. Similarly Goddess Saraswathi is meant for education. Many of us donot know that the Lord Hayagreeva is the Guru for Goddess Saraswathi. We are seeing about Hayagreeva here.

Goddess Saraswathi
Goddess Saraswathi is worshipped for a good education,remembarance,clear speaking etc., Normally there is no seperate temple for Goddess Saraswathi. There are small shrines for Goddess Saraswathi in all temples. A seperate temple for Goddess Saraswathi is in Kooththanoor,near Mayuram of Tamilnadu. Many children with parents go there to pray for a good education. It is strongly believed that prayig by putting their pen and writing instruments in the feet of koothanoor saraswathi, they can score higher marks in examination.

Lord Hayagreeva
Lord Hayagreeva is Guru of Goddess Saraswathi. He is an avathar of Lord Mahavishnu/Narayan. He will have horseface and human body.

Once two demon kings called Madhu and Kaidaba, born alongwith Lord Brahma. As they have extraneous powers they started to torture everybody including Lord Brahma and once he did like that and taken away all Vedas from Lord Brahma and kept in underground by keeping horsefaced demons for safeguard. On request of all Rishis and Lord Brahma to Lord Mahavishnu, Mahavishnu go to the place for rescue of vedas. On seeing there the horsefaced demons, He also disguised himself as horsefaced human and fought with them and rescued the vedas. Since He saved all vedas, He become godfather of Vedas. He is worshipped for a good education.

Temples for Hayagreeva
Like saraswathi, we can see shrines for Hayagreeva also almost in all temples of Lord Vishnu. Seperate famous temple for Hayagreeva is found in Chettipunyam,on the way to Chingleput from chennai. It is famous temple which will open in all days from 7.30AM to 12.00 Noon and 4.30 PM to 7.30 PM.

Special Day and Nivedhan for Hayagreeva

The star 'Thiruvonam' in all months is special for prayer of Lord Hayagreeva.

The special nivedhan for Him is to be prepared in the following way:

1.Grinding smooth the bengal gram - 1cup (soaked well in water one hour before).
2.Heating Milk - 2 cup in a deep fry pan
3.Mixing one cup of sugar/jaggary,one cup of coconut,grinded bengalgram,ghee-1/2 cup.
4.Stir well for 05 minutes and mix further 1/2 cup of ghee. Mix cardomam powder a pinch and stir well.
5. Switch off the stove.

Special Sloka for Hayagreeva prayer
The following sloka can be recited daily by all especially by students for better education.

Gnaanandamayam DEvam Nirmala Spadikaakrutham
Aadhaaram Sarva vidhyaanaam Hayagreevam UpaasmahE
