Know about GRE (Graduate Record Exam) 2011

GRE stands for graduate record exam. The purpose of this exam is to assess the general ability and language comprehension and writing skills of a person aspiring to join a graduate schools of global platform. There is a lot of variations in the curriculums and examination criteria across the world.
This generalized exam is to standardize the required skills to pursue a course across the globe. There are gamut of countries that accept GRE scores ranging from Asian, European and American countries. But this is very important for North American countries like USA. It is conducted by ETS (Education testing services) a non-profitable body which is U.S based.

Types of GRE

1) General GRE (now revised GRE )

2) Subject GRE.

Usually GRE is synonymous with general GRE but most of them are unaware of the Subject GRE. The general GRE test is basically to assess the aptitude and English language. In the aptitude part it tests high school mathematics and in English part it is famous for irking the students with Vocabulary questions. However recently there is a change in verbal (English) pattern.
The subject GRE test determines your knowledge in some specific subjects which you would like to take up in graduate schools. Usually most of the masters program accepts your general GRE scores with the background of related academics like a bachelors of the related subject in the home country. However the students with Subject GRE are preferred to the students with only general GRE scores. Mind you that general GRE is must for all students. The subject GRE is especially required if you are aspiring a doctoral (PhD) program.
You can choose any one of the following eight subjects.

1) Chemistry
2) Computer science
3) Bio-chemistry, cellular and molecular biology
4) Literature in English
5) Mathematics
6) Physics
7) Biology
8) Psychology

One more difference is the General GRE is conducted as CBT (computer based test) where the facility is available and paper based test at other nations. But the Subject GRE is a paper based exam only.
