Human Resource Development Programmes in 2011 - NIMH, Secunderabad

Human resource development is one of the primary activities of the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH), Secunderabad. It offers long-term and short-term programmes from certificate to post-graduate levels with a view to prepare s and parents for serving mentally challenged persons. This resource endeavours to describe such training programmes.

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, established National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH) at Secunderabad (Andhra Pradesh) in 1984. This apex body is engaged in multifarious activities like human resource development, research and community based rehabilitation. The Institute develops models of care and rehabilitation of the mentally handicapped persons, provides consultancy to voluntary organisations and also documents and disseminates information related to mental disability.

Human Resource Development Programmes:

NIMH is an ISO 9001:2008 certified Institute and offers both long-term and short-term training programmes with a view to develop human resource to cater to the need of the mentally challenged persons. A wide variety of programmes from certificate to post-graduate level are offered, covering freshers, professionals and even parents to enable them to serve the mentally challenged efficiently and skillfully. Many of these programmes are offered at the campus of the Innstitute at Secundrabad but a few are offered at its Regional Centres also.

A. Long-term Training Programmes:

1. M. Phil. in Rehabilitation Psychology:

Eligibility: M.A. / M.Sc. degree in Psychology from a UGC recognised University with a minimum of 55% marks and in the case of SC/ST/OBC category a minimum of 50/% marks in aggregate.

3. Master in Disability Rehabilitation Administration:

Eligibility: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in disability rehabilitation recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India and/ or Medical Council of India with a minimum of 50% marks. Or

Masters degree from any recognized University or accredited body in any of the fields of Psychology, Social Work, Management, Social Welfare, or any other allied field (in the opinion of NIMH) with a minimum of 50% marks. or

Masters degree in any discipline followed by 2 years of professional experience in any organization related to disability rehabilitation

4. M. Sc. Disability Studies (Early Intervention):

Eligibility: Degree from a recognized university out of the following:
MBBS, BUMS, BAMS, Naturopathy, BHMS, BMR, BRS (MR), BRT, BOT, BPT, B. Sc. (HLS), PGDEI, Masters in Child Development, M. Phil. Psychology with 50% marks in case of general candidates and 45% marks in case of SC and ST candidates.

B. Ed. (General) course and one year Diploma Course in Special Education recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India

12. B .Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation) - Distance Mode:

Eligibility: 1. Bachelor Degree from any UGC recognized University; and
2. Fulfil any one of the following conditions:
(i) be a parent of a child with disability
(ii) be a person with disability
(iii) Possess a RCI recognized Diploma in Special Education (DSE)
(iv) have undergone Bridge Course of RCI
(v) have completed the RCI recognized Foundation course (FC-SEDE) conducted by MPBOU
(vi) have a minimum of two years' experience in a special school environment in any disability area after graduation.

These programmes are normally of 4 weeks duration and are being conducted at its campus at Secunderabad. The courses focus on different subjects and cover different categories of professionals. The following are subjects for the certificate courses slated for this year:

In addition to the above mentioned certificate there are courses shorter duration varying from one day to one week.
