Pattern of Himachal Pradesh administration services (HPAS) mains exam


Pattern of HPAS mains examination has been changed somewhat as that of HPAS Preliminary examination. Pattern of HPAS mains exam includes both optional and compulsory subjects. There are mainly two optional subjects that a student can choose and when they fill the form they have to specify their optional subjects.

Compulsory subjects for HPAS main exam


English, Hindi (minimum of 40% marks should be obtained to qualify the main exam, both carry 100 marks each) and general studies (150 marks) are included in these examination. The main exam also includes compulsory essay writing and it carries 100 marks.

Optional subjects for HPAS main exam


There are total of two optional subjects that a student has to choose when he/she appears in the main examination. Both of the optional subjects were divided into two papers each. The distribution of marks is same for each paper which is 150. Subjects included as optional subjects for the main examination are:
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Anthropology
  • Botany
  • Chemistry
  • Civil Engineering
  • Commerce & Accountancy
  • Economics
  • Electrical Engineering
  • English Literature
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • Hindi Literature
  • History
  • Law
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Philosophy
  • Physics
  • Political science
  • Psychology
  • Public Administration
  • Sanskrit
  • Sociology
  • Statistics
  • Urdu
  • Zoology
  • Management
  • Forestry
  • Horticulture
  • Medical Science

While choosing these subjects one has to be careful that he/she cannot choose two subjects which belong to the same field as:
  • Mathematics and statistics
    Only one subject out of all engineering subjects: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering.
  • Only one out of the given languages: Hindi, English literature, Urdu, Sanskrit.
  • One out of animal husbandry and agriculture and veterinary sciences.
  • Only one from international relations, public administration and political science.
  • One out of accountancy, commerce and management.
  • Anthropology and sociology.
  • Public administration and management.
  • Forestry and horticulture.
  • Horticulture, agriculture and animal husbandry and veterinary sciences.
  • Forestry, agriculture and animal husbandry & veterinary sciences.

The standard of examination is that of graduation level. Three hours were available for all these papers. Candidate should have knowledge of the customs and culture of Himachal Pradesh.

Languages in which HPAS mains exam can be answered
1. English
2. Hindi
3. Urdu

Number of students called for interview for HPAS main exam


Three times more candidates were called for the viva than the total number of vacancies. In case if two or more candidates have equal minimum marks in examinations than all of them will be called for the viva.

Other general instructions for the candidates appearing in HPAS Main exam


  • Candidate should have good handwriting that examiner can understand what the candidate wants to express. The candidates with poor handwriting suffer from unwanted deduction of marks and this will create a lot of differences in the results.
  • The candidates with good, effective writing skills, were good in English and having good vocabulary, were benefited.
  • Selection of candidates for viva is done on the basis of total marks of candidate in the exam. The questions of viva are related to general interest and were asked to check the personnel suitability for the administrative services.

HPAS main examination is just the test of the potential of a candidate that he/she is having. Main aim of conducting HPAS exam is to test the capabilities of the aspirants, their assessment power, their decision taking capabilities, logic power, creativity, attitude and their point of view towards any problem or condition and leadership quality. In case of a tie of marks in the written examinations, candidates are judged on the basis of their viva.

The HPAS main examination is the one where candidates were tested for their writing skills. So, the candidates which qualify HPAS exam and enters the administrative services are brilliant and tested on different parameters. After passing all these hurdles we expect that this furnace of HPAS will produces a better administrator which is beneficial for shining future of that administrator, our state and country.
