The word essay is derived from the Latin word 'essai', which means to attempt. An essay is a short literary composition in any subject. It has been said to be the most popular mode of writing.
An essay is a composition wherein the author discusses a topic generally, giving his views on the subject. It can be made interesting by adding anecdotes and illustrations.
Classification of essays
Essays may be classified into four groups -
A narrative essay is usually the narration of some event or a series of events. For example, a festival you had attended, an accident you have witnessed, a journey you had undertaken etc. To write a good narrative essay you must develop the skill to put down the details in such a manner that the reader must be able to visualize it.
As the name suggests, a descriptive essay is usually a description of a person, place or thing such as the Milkman, Kolkata, the Thirupati temple, the village well etc. In a descriptive essay, one should ensure that all the details of the subject divulge from and converge to a single point. The author should therefore make an effort to have all the details in the essay to be so brought out in a way to create a single impression in the mind of the reader.
This type of essays is, as a rule, of an abstract or general in nature. Topics like habits, hobbies, feelings, politics etc fall in this genre. The knowledge of the author may be iced with some imagination which syncs with the truth.
These are essays which are purely imaginative in nature. The author should have a fair idea of the topic which he can develop with his imagination. Topics like, if I were the Prime Minister of India, the autobiography of a pen etc are examples.
Points to be kept in mind
a) A good essayist must always be a keen observer. He should be well informed and must have a good hold over the language. He must understand the topic and its possibilities before starting to write.
After getting an idea as to what to write and how to go about it, one should jot down the points in the sequence you would like to write the matter. The next part is to put the stray thoughts under three heads-
i) Introduction: Here you will be introducing the topic so as to give the reader an idea of the subject. It should be brief and interesting.
ii) Body: The body must include all the details which you want to include in the essay. It would be easy for the reader to assimilate if the body is divided into convenient paragraphs.
iii) Conclusion: You must conclude your essay by summing up with your point of view.
b) Be careful not to give abrupt start to your paragraphs. Each paragraph must appear to be a natural offspring of the previous paragraph. The language used should be to the point, simple and forceful. Never try to go beyond your reach.
I hope I could convey a fair idea about how to go about writing a good and effective essay. To conclude, I quote Edmunds,"Do not labor to decorate your essay; let the ornament come naturally; ask yourself concerning it what a girl asks herself concerning a ribbon- 'Does it match?'.

It's a nice write-up and especially helpful for a budding writer. While the essayist has to be a good observer it has to be seen that the topic is discussed in a sequential way. Each of the parts, as mentioned in this article, carries its significance and linked to one another. It should be kept in mind not to make the essay too long which may find a less number of readers.
This is a very useful article and would help the beginners much. Everyone requires to learn essay writing at some point in one's life and it is imperative that we should learn this skill as early as possible.
It is said that essay writing is an art. One cannot write it just like that without any homework. It is said that the seeds of writing are created during the reading phase in our life and until a person reads much it would be difficult for him to write whether it is an essay or creative piece of writing. So, it is imperative that we have to read either generally or specifically before attempting to write. It does not matter much whether one reads from the book or online but I would prefer books as in online sometimes too much distraction is there. Those who can concentrate and avoid surfing here and there can, of course, read on the net also. Once the habit of reading is developed one would find that one's vocabulary is increasing day by day and those words would be invariably used in any essay presentation that the individual is planning to write at a later stage. The more a person read, the more avenues of expressions are generated. So, I would suggest to all essay writing enthusiasts to read the related material well before writing a good piece of an essay.
