The Maharaja Sayajirao University (MS University) of Baroda, named after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the former ruler of Baroda, is one of the prominent universities of India. Founded in 1881 as Baroda College of Science faculty, the institute was upgraded to University status in 1949. It is also one of the oldest universities within the country. It is the only University in Gujarat which offers various courses in English medium with unitary and residential status.

Location and campus of Maharaja Sayajirao University

The University is located at the center of the city Baroda and covers approximately 275 acres of land. The vast land houses 5 different campuses viz Main Campus, Fatehgunj Campus, Sayajiganj Campus, Faculty of Medicine Campus, Kalabhavan Campus etc. Besides having a very wide campus it offers good accommodation for students coming from various places across the country and abroad. It has 10 boys' hostel and 4 girls' hostel. All the hostels have ample facilities to make a comfortable stay for its borders. It has a big library for students known as Srimati Hansa Mehta library which was established on 1 May 1950.

Student intake capacity of Maharaja Sayajirao University and faculty strength

The average yearly intake of the University for various degree programs has been more than 35,000 students in last couple of years. The current faculty strength comprises of 82 Professors, 185 Readers, 480 Lecturers and 431 honorary research members working on the campus. The university has a comprehensive academic program with industry interface which makes the whole learning experience very lively for its students.

Central facilities at Maharaja Sayajirao University

The university has many facilities which facilitate development of mental and physical health of its students. Besides serving their basic purposes, these facilities are meant for promotion of sports, social interaction and cultural activities.These facilities are Library, Health Center, Computer Center, Hostel, Guest House, National Cadet corps [NCC], National service scheme [NSS], University press, Halls of Residence, Depth of physical education, General education center.

Shrimati Hansa Mehta Library, the University Library of M S University of Baroda , is the central library of the university. There are 15 other faculty libraries which are integrated through University Library System which gives easy and comprehensive access to all of its readers. The library has a single largest Reading Room with an area covering 10,600 sq. ft. that can accommodate about 1,100 readers at a time. The library remains open for 14 hours a day from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm throughout the year except during National holidays.

Faculties of Maharaja Sayajirao University

The University has 13 faculties in various disciplines, out of which 12 offers doctoral studies. The faculties are viz. faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce, Technology and Engineering, Management Studies, Fine Arts, Education and Psychology, Performing Arts, Home Science, Medicine, Law, Social Work and Journalism & Communication.

Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts was established in 1881 by the erstwhile ruler of Baroda State, H. H. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Gradually the faculty was developed into a full-fledged degree institution in 1889. The Faculty is blessed by the great philosopher,Shri Aurobindo Ghosh, who was appointed by Sir Sayajirao to teach English. He became the Vice-Principal of The Baroda College. The department offers under graduate, post graduate, Doctoral programmes, Diploma and Certificate courses in various departments of Arts. The faculty includes Department of Archaeology and Ancient History , Economics ,English , Gujarati , German , Hindi , History , Library and Information Science , Linguistics , Marathi , Persian , Arabic , Urdu , Philosophy, Political Science , Russian , French , Sanskrit , Pali , Prakrit , Sociology , Sindhi , Traditional Sanskrit Studies and Canadian Studies.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science started its independent existence from March, 1951 with Dr. C.S. Patel as its First Dean. The faculty includes Department of Bio-Chemistry , Botany, chemistry , Geography , Geology , Mathematics , Microbiology , Physics , Statistics , Zoology and BCA Programme .

Faculty of Commerce

The Faculty of commerce offers B.Com., M.Com. and Ph.D. Degrees through its undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programmes. The faculty also runs graduate and Post Graduate Diploma programmes with specialization in Business Management, Banking and Cooperative Management.

Faculty of Technology and Engineering

Popularly known as "Techo", the faculty of Engineering & Technology offers numerous courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, Drawing and Printing, Architecture and Photo engraving, Textile Chemistry including Dyeing, Bleaching, Sizing & Printing, oil and Soap making etc. The faculty gets financial support from UGC and is aided by UNDP, USAID and Government agencies.

Faculty of Law

The faculty of Law has produced reputed lawyers and judges working in judicial services within the country. It has produced renowned Judicial officers and members of bars serving at Indian Supreme Court and other lower courts of India. Courses include graduation and post graduation level studies with specialization in Business Law, Criminal Law, Taxation practice etc.

Faculty of Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Faculty of the Maharaja Sayajirao University is one of the most renowned faculties among all other faculties of the university. Its reputation lies in its artistic and cultural activities which attracts students from various parts of the world. The University is the first one in the Country to take the initiative of offering degree and Post-Graduate Courses in the various branches of Fine Arts. This was an unique challenge in itself to break the traditional boundaries and creating new form of Art Institution. The institution helps in developing creative ideas among its students in the areas of fine arts and provides wider space which is very much essential for fostering creative thinking. Courses it imparts Applied Arts, Art History and Aesthetics, Graphic Arts, Museology, Painting and Sculpture.

Faculty of Social Work

The faculty of Social work was started as Baroda School of Social Work in 1950. The institute was elevated to the status of a faculty in 1951 and is the only institute which have been given faculty status within the country. The faculty owes much of its vision to its first vice chancellor Smt. Hansa Mehta. The faculty is famous for its Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW). Various courses that the faculty offers include P.G. Diploma in I.R.P.M.; P.G. Diploma in Human Resource Management, P.G. Diploma in Health Management and Interventions; P.G. Diploma in Social Development and Organization Management; P.G. Diploma in Criminology and Correctional Management. The average Class size in each course is 40.

Faculty of Family & Community Sciences

Started as Home Science College the faculty imparts knowledge with major focus on strengthening family life. The educational programs of the faculty is designed in such a way that it helps in enriching the standard of living of an individual student. Various departments included in the faculty are:
Department of Clothing and Textile, Department of Foods and Nutrition, Department of Family and Community Resource Management, Department of Extension & Communication, Department of Human Development & Family Studies, Chetan Balwadi, WHO Collaborationg Centre for Nutrition, Early Child Development Learning, Women's Studies Research Center

Faculty of Performing Arts

The faculty of Performing Arts has its ancient roots to famous Darbari singer Khan Saheb Mawlabakhsh who, under patronage of Sayajirao, laid foundation of 'Gayan Shala' on February 26, 1886. Later in 1949, the 'Gayah Shala' was renamed as the Music College and in 1953 it was rechristened again as the College of Indian Dance and Dramatics. In 1985, the college was elevated to the present status of a faculty. The faculty has been sanctified by famous Music maestros such as Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Inayat Khan who taught students at the faculty in its early days.

The faculty offers courses up to Ph. D. levels in various disciplines of performing arts such as Music, Dance and Drama.

Faculty of Management Studies

The faculty known as M.S. Patel institute is highly rated among the top management institutes of India. The Faculty aims to develop itself into a centre for quality management education, known for its contribution to the development of Business Leadership and Corporate Excellence. The institute offers courses with the specialization in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management and Information Systems. Various programs run by the faculty are:

Faculty of Journalism & Communication

The faculty offers two-year programme in Master of Communication Studies since 1997. The Faculty strives to provide intensive theoretical instructions and practical training in Journalism and allied areas.

Faculty of Medicine

The faculty of medicine includes Baroda Medical College, Physiotherapy College and Nursing College. Baroda Medical College, is the medical educational institution for under-graduate and post-graduate medical studies.

The Faculty of Medicine has the following departments:-
Department of Anesthesiology, Anatomy,Bio-Chemistry,Forensic Medicine,Medicine, Microbiology,Obstetrics & Gynecology,Ophthalmology. Baroda Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya

Formerly known as the Rajakiya Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya,Baroda Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya is an institute of international repute. The institute offers all the Under-Graduate, Graduate, Post-Graduate as well as Doctoral Degree Courses in numerous ancient Indian Shastra through the medium of Sanskrit at the University level. The faculty has produced highly acclaimed and nationally renowned scholars in Sanskrit literature. The institute has undertaken some educational experiments to modernize Sanskrit education and thereby to satisfy the cultural needs of the community at large, under the programme of popularization of Sanskrit learning. There is a good response from the community to these courses. These courses are being prescribed in view of the recommendations of various Education Committees and Commissions.

Admission procedure

Students can get admission to various courses through successful completion of a series of selection tests consisting of written examination, group discussion and personal interview. Each successful student has to achieve a minimum qualifying mark in each sections individually and also obtain an aggregate score that secures him/her a place in the merit order of the top forty or ten wait listed candidates.


His Highness the Maharaja of Baroda is the ex-officio chancellor of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. The present chancellor is Dr. Mrunalini Devi Puar, the sister of the Late Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad.
