This actually was given the name of distance education. For the purpose of providing secondary and intermediate education, the Indira Gandhi national Open University (IGNOU) for university and technical education purposes and National Open University (now the National institute of Schools) were established.
In addition to the above, several open universities of many states were opened up amongst which is the also the Nalanda Open University. Many correspondence courses are also being conducted through numerous regular universities and through umpteen study centres.Types of courses under distance education
Under the distance education scheme, both the formal and informal types of education are made available to the aspiring students. Its degrees and diplomas are recognised. Several universities including the 'IGNOU' conduct the studies of graduation informally. In such syllables, 10+2+3 education pattern is not adopted. The student above 18 years of age can do the courses without doing intermediate. This is expected from him that he has the knowledge of Hindi and English. Besides he should possess the mental ability to study and grasp the subjects of the graduation level. Distance education- admission procedure
Prior to admission into the graduation courses, universities generally conduct preparatory programme of 6 months duration. In which, passing out is a must. Admissions are carried out in arts, science and commerce streams through this procedure. National institute of Schools (NIOAS)

Earlier on, questions were raised on the quality of the distance education but much improvisation has happened in its quality by virtues of advertisements through the TV and Radio. Now the scientific and technical degree /diploma courses are being run in greater numbers through this distance education system. Lacks of students take admission in IGNOU alone every year round. IGNOU really is the people's university.Transfer of credit- NIOAS
Transfer of credit given to students is such a facility, the assumptions of which is not in any board excepting of course the' NIOAS', under this plan, any student failing from any recognised board can give examination of merely 3 subjects in the 'NIOAS'. The NIOAS declares the students passed out by crediting up the marks of the original board's results of the passed out subjects of the failed student. The failed students of 2012 board examination can take admission in NIOAS to appear at its examination to be commenced in the months of October-November.
