Why are heart attacks on the rise among women?

Your heart beat is the heart beat of your entire family. If your heart stops beating, death can come immediately causing much grief and sorrow to your family members. Therefore taking care of your heart is very important. Heart attack was common among men at one time but now many women are victims too. Why are heart attacks among women rising? I will talk about this in this article.


Heart attacks have been steadily rising among women since the year 2000. Only 30 years ago the percentage of men and women suffering heart attacks was 5.2%. But today this figure has reached a staggering a staggering 25%. Subsequent to the year 2000, the number of women who have died because of heart attacks has reached the number of men who have died because of the same thing. At one time only women above 50 years of age were in danger of heart attacks. But now even women between 30 to 40 years of age face the danger of a heart attack. The figure relating to the number of women between 30 to 40 years of age who have died because of heart attacks has doubled in the last 30 years. So what are the reasons for the rising trend of heart attacks among women today and what can be done to prevent this? Let us discuss this.

Reasons for rising heart attacks among women today

High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes are some reasons why both men and women suffer heart attacks. But in addition to these there are other factors that can cause heart attacks among women. These are-
  • High level of fat deposit on the stomach, high blood pressure and high diabetes can cause a heart attack in women more easily than in men.

  • A heart attack can be aggravated by emotional factors also in women. Women tend to be more emotional than men. They also tend to be affected easily by negative emotions like anger, grief, depression etc which can have a bad affect on the heart.

  • These days the number of women smoking and drinking have increased. In the metro cities of India this is considered a normal thing. Smoking and drinking can damage the hearts of women more easily than men. But they are not aware of this fact.

  • The intake of artificial, processed and junk foods has also caused heart problems in women. Many women these days tend to not exercise which increases the problems of side effect of such processed and junk foods.

  • Women these days are aware of the dangers of breast cancer. But they do not seem to take the threat of heart attacks seriously. Many women still think that heart attacks occur only in men today. So when the symptoms of a heart trouble begins, such women tend not to take it seriously. By the time they recognize the symptom and take some action, it is often too late.

  • Stressful life, tensions from the husband and family, competition at office etc is more common today than it was some 30 years ago. This has also increased heart attacks among women today.

  • During pre eclampsia pregnancy the chances of blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol increase by 60%! This can easily cause heart attacks in women.

  • Anti-pregnancy pills can also increase the chances of blood clots and stroke in women somewhat leading to a risk of heart attack. This risk increases when diabetic and smoking women take birth control pills.

  • Women who suffer migraine face double the risk of getting a heart attack.

  • Symptoms of heart attack

    The symptoms leading to a heart attack are difficulty in breathing, getting pain in the neck, jaw or the upper portion of one's back and getting pain the the chest area. Sometimes this pain can also travel to the hands, waist and stomach. Other symptoms of a forthcoming heart attack are vomiting, sweating, giddiness, trouble in talking, confusion and not being able to see properly. Some heart patients can exhibit one or more of these symptoms while others do not display any of these symptoms at all! Often women who get one or more of these symptoms tend to ignore them. If these symptoms tend to appear again and again, they should not be ignored.

  • First thing you have to do is to like yourself and your heart so that you care for yourself and your heart more.

  • Say no to smoking and alcohol. Smoking is more damaging than drinking in both men and women.

  • Avoid junk food and stick to a healthy diet so that your cholesterol levels remain low.

  • Keep getting a checkup up at regular intervals done even if you don't face any symptom at all.

  • Keep your weight under control. Start the habit of mornings walks, moderate exercises and yoga.

  • Keep checking your cholesterol, lipid profile and diabetes at regular intervals since these greatly increase the chances of heart attacks.

  • Why are women more prone to heart attacks?

    Women are also more prone to heart attacks as their coronary arteries are smaller than that of women. A block in this can cause a heart attack more easily than in men. This can cause death easily.

    When does a check up become necessary?

    The check up of your heart becomes necessary today if-
  • Your age is above 30 years.

  • If you tend to experience breathlessness during work or physical labor.

  • If you are overweight by 10-15 kilograms or more.

  • If you have diabetes, cholesterol or high blood pressure.

  • If you face a great deal of stress from your family or work.

  • If there is a great deal of fat on your tummy or if the breadth of your waist is above 80 cms.

  • If the good cholesterol levels in your body is below 50 mg DL.

  • If your fasting blood sugar is 100 mg DL or higher.

  • If there is a history of heart disease or heart attack in your family.

    There is a compilation of all the relevant points needed to be taken into consideration but as far as I have seen in our family - set up at least in Indian - families, ladies don't have the time to ponder over their health issues. They constantly think of the well being of their near and dear ones and even on the health parameters they would give maximum stress for the other family members suffering from the same problem with which they, too, are suffering. This attitude is prevalent to all educated or otherwise. We need to change our values so that we can take a precautionary measure in case of detection of any abnormality relating to heart health. Moreover, every care should be taken up to ensure the healthy functioning of heart of women. The husbands should take proactive roles in this regard.

    Read the article. This is definitely an useful article which has provided valuable tips to avoid heart-related ailments. However, I would like to state that the heart-related problem is increasingly affecting the population of India cutting across the barriers of gender and age. I mean to say that people from all age-groups irrespective of the gender are being affected from heart-related ailments because of drastic changes in life-style and food-habits and more stress in life. However, I can't fully agree with the author's observation that women are affected because of their emotional nature. In earlier days also, women were emotional, but heart-related problems have always been comparatively less among women.
