What are the harmful effects of maida and how maida is prepared ?

Now a days it is very difficult to live without this beautiful white colour flour called Maida. But have you ever noticed it is a silent killer for human beings. But how? This article tells about how maida is made from wheat flour, what are the toxic ingredients which can mix with maida to make sweet bakery items and overview of other harmful chemicals present in the eatable food products.

How Maida is made?

In wheat there are two parts, the outside shell part is eatable and the inside one is not. The inside part does not contain any fiber too. This part grinded and bleach with benzoic peroxide to form a white powder. This one again mixed with Alloxen (chemical) to form Maida. Because of this process Maida is very soft, it has already gone through the dangerous chemical processing.

Alloxen and Benzoic peroxide in Maida

This chemical is mainly used in rats and pigs for the testing of insulin. Scientists usually inject this chemical to those animals so that it gets affected with diabetic hence can test their experiments medicines on them.To get a pure white colour Benzoic peroxide is used in cloths mill industry. If you take this powder and mix with water, fumes will come out and is dangerous to our skin. But unfortunately this chemical is one of the important intakes for Maida production.

Why Mineral oil and Aginomoto uses with Maida products?

As everybody knows, from petroleum we can extract petrol, diesel and kerosene. Once it's done we get a smell less bi product called mineral oil. The advantage of this oil is we can make/ fry any food item with and nothing will happen for a longer period. If you make any food item with coconut oil something will happen to that food after some days. This is because of the natural bacteria which come automatically in any food products. But with mineral oil even natural bacteria can't sustain. Then we can imagine the powerful nature of this chemical.

The other villian Aginomoto's birth place is China. Because of severe kidney failure reported over there Chinese government banned this chemical. But in India most of the food items are still served with Aginomoto. This chemical adds the taste to the food in other way it actually enhances the taste buds. Most of today's food items contain aginomoto for e.g. in biriyani, fried rice, soup and other Maida food products. If you buy any products (especially soup) from shop please go through the ingredients of the same and say NO to aginomoto products. I have read some article about aginomoto in that doctors advise that if you fell some kind of headache after having Chinese food no wonder they might have used aginomoto in their food products.
Other set of chemicals which are available in bakery foods are sodium meta bi sulphate, benzoic, citric acid. All these chemicals are hazards to humankinds especially for pregnant ladies and kids.

Where can we see Maida products

90% of the Bakery items are made from Maida. Bakery is a hub for most of the dangerous chemicals. To get colours in food products, need mix of different chemicals. The same chemical (Petroleum bi products) is used in Paints manufacturing industry. Other chemicals used with Maida are mineral oil, taste makers, aginomoto, preservative, dalda, sacrin, sugar etc. The list goes on.

Conclusion

As a known fact in the current life style we can’t completely avoid all the above mentioned chemicals and foods. According to health survey most of the diseases are because of the use of junk kind of food. Maida is one of the villains for most of the diseases. So try to avoid bakery food products and also please take care of your health by routine checkup and regular exercise.

Very important for all. All should atleast try to follow what is said.

This article is an eye opener for me. All these days I was under the impression that maida is only wheat flour minus the bran, like the rice powder, and never had an inkling of the chemical treatment.
Also, the information on agnimoto.
I fee this article should come in a regular newspapers, so that people can be aware of the bad effects of the most used items in the food.

Very Helpful article for me at least. I have been prone to acne since my teenage and i thought it was Hormonal effects. Later i stopped dairy , meat and cold items too. I tried several acne treatments, but it never ceased. I used to have bread in the mornings before break fast and I love biscuits. And I happen to read this article and for two days I didn't eat any maida related products and I noticed a big difference on me. Now its been a months since I had maida, though its difficult to avoid nowadays.
So, who ever suffers from acne try avoiding maida products, it might make a huge difference. Cheers

Citric acid is present in lemon. If it is harmful, why doctors advice us to take lemon in our daily food and is healthy?

Thanks for the very useful information about Maida.

Though I am strongly against Maida, this article is a dubious one and seems unscientific. Even well known facts are distorted to establish some points. eg: birth place of Ajinomoto is Japan, not China and that is not banned in China, as claimed by the author. And if someone claims that Citric acid is dangerous, then we can guess the quality of this article. I never use Maida because I know it is harmful, but not harmful than this kind of misrepresentations.

Use full article, I guess the author meant "Citric Acid" artificially/chemically derived and not the natural citric acid found in lemon. Please ignore some minor factual incorrectness like origin of Ajinomoto/MSG. An occasional indulgence, even of maida products may not be bad for health.

It is very useful information in day to day life,I am very thanking to all give me a great useful information.

This article is based on what is written in wiki about the manufacture of Maida. Maida is bleached by Oxygen while being manufactured in mills. Mentions of mineral oil is not a fact and only unscrupulous oil manufacturers resort to adulterating edible oil with other natural origin oils like cashew nut oil, rubber seed oils and the likes.

Good information given on maida product. It is always better to avoid to eat food products made by maida powder by diabetic people.

Guest Author: Prabhakara21 Nov 2015

It is an eye opening article! One should avoid the bakery products as far as possible and also educate the children about the danger of those products.

Whatever has been said about Alloxen is true and yes Ajinomoto is banned in several countries. Indian government should look into this and ban all harmful products. Companies looks only for profits rather someone's life.

Guest Author: Arjeth22 Sep 2016

We must know that singara and kochuri consumed in plenty are also harmful. Govt must ban them if they are serious about health in the villages.

Seems like not at all a scientific evidence based article. Please provide references for your arguments.

Guest Author: Prakash12 Oct 2016

I went through this article and comments on it. It is a casual one and not based on scientific studies.

Ajinomoto is a dangerous product often claimed as carcenogenic and is found in most Chinese foods. Prior to marketed maida days, our parents extracted it by sieving wheat flour. So no chemicals added and hence maida should not be labeled as this dangerous. Of course it is missing fibers present in flour. Other information about chemicals used may be true for any other market food products so they can be equally dangerous. Still we use them. Citric acid dangerous? Ridiculous isn't it?

Thanks for giving such vivid details about this provision item which is being consumed in almost all the homes regularly inspite of the harmful chemicals therein. This type of articles are really very good for educating the masses about the ill effects of chemicals mixed in food items.

I am a regular reader of health articles in various magazines, but incidentally did not find such a topic there. Thanks to the writer for his crisp presentation.

I am very much thankful to author for providing facts regarding harmful effects of maida. A doctor treats a patient after the diseases occur but such authors are more than doctors as they serve entire society's well-being. They caution human that prevention is better than cure.

I would like to make awareness about our lifestyle also. Take the lifestyle of 2 continents: Europe and Asia. Europeans eat burgers, bread and drink heavily. Still they are healthy, as they sleep early and eat very less at night. By 6pm they finish their food. Asians eat late night, so are having a full stomach at night and then wake up late.

Very good article, I have shared it via facebook. Thanks and congrats!!

I think author is discussing about citric acid in chemical form. The citric acid in lemon is not in its pure chemical form, its one among the components in lemon. Chemicals in purest form may have different impact than in the natural mix by nature, which is consumable.

Guest Author: Priya jaisal17 Nov 2017

thanks for giving such important information as at my home we always use to eat bakery products especially the
pav . I didn't know that the maida is made from such chemical products. Once again thanks for such information.
