How to select the right mattress for home?

A mattress defines the comfort level and enhances the design of a bedroom. Choice of a right mattress for a home can be a very cumbersome task as all mattresses look alike. It is not highly recommended to choose a mattress following the salesman views or purely by cost factor. This article provides a complete guide to factors to be considered in choosing the right mattress for home and the types of mattresses available in the market. Read this article and make the right choice for your bedroom.

A mattress is one of the main factors responsible for a good night's sleep. There are many factors which can affect a person's sleep like temperature in the room, stress levels of a person while sleeping, activeness of the mind, health problems and comfort level of the bed. Hence, one needs to address various issues for enjoying a peaceful sleep and the first basic step is to ensure that the mattress is suitable to provide the much required comfort to the tired body.

The life span of a mattress generally revolves around five to eight years. The first symptom to know if the mattress requires a change is to assess if the mattress provides the same kind of support to the body as it did when it was new. When a person is unable to get a good night's sleep or wakes up in the morning with pain in the back, then it is the first trigger that there is some problem with the mattress. A comfortable mattress has the best advantage of keeping the person in almost same position and prevents continuous tossing in the bed.

A search in the market would throw up an array of options for the purchase of a good mattress for the home. The combination of cost and benefit would not be a match most of the times. So, how to choose a good mattress for home? Experts suggest that a good mattress can support the body spine in a neutral position and also other parts of the body in their natural shape and curve. The mattress should be neither too firm nor too soft. A very firm mattress can provide unnecessary push on power points and disturb the alignment. A very soft mattress cannot support the pressure points in the body and the body is held in an uneasy manner. Both types can result in body and back pains in the morning.

How to choose a good mattress

The thumb rule to ensure that the mattress is good for the body is to test the mattress in the store by lying down in a position in which the person would sleep under normal conditions. This can help a person pick the right mattress out of the many available in the store.
There are three factors which should be considered before searching for various types of mattresses available in the market.

Size of the mattress

The size of the mattress depends on the height of a person and space availability for the mattress. If a person is 5.5 inches in height, he should opt for a queen size bed. The average dimension for a mattress is:
  • King size bed: 76'× 80'

  • Queen size bed: 60' × 80'

  • Double bed: 53' × 75'

  • Twin bed: 38'× 75'

Cost of the mattress

The cost of the mattress can be an important consideration in deciding on the type of mattress to be chosen. The budget of a family plays a great role in the choice of a mattress for the home.

Type of mattress

The rapidly evolving market has come out with many types of mattresses. One needs to have a look at the pros and cons of each mattress in order to decide and select the appropriate mattress for the home.

Let us look at various types of mattresses available in the market and the respective benefits and disadvantages of all the mattresses.

Cotton mattress

Cotton mattress is one which is filled with natural cotton. They have been used for centuries are known for their softness and ultimate comfort levels. They help with the circulation of air and enable a person to have a peaceful sleep. Germs and mites have a tendency to dwell in cotton mattresses. Hence, the need for maintenance is very high. The mattress needs to be exposed to sunlight under a routine schedule. However, the cotton mattresses have a sagging tendency and require replacement frequently.

Choice of cotton mattress
Cotton mattress is among the cheapest forms of mattress with an excellent combination of comfort. Their advantage of allowing the body to lie in comfortable base makes them a highly preferred type of mattress. The frequent replacement costs are also much lower compared to other mattresses. Moreover, people try to get the mattress made in their homes to ensure that the cotton is properly beaten up and then filled in the mattress.

Coir mattresses

Coir mattresses are made up of layers of coir fiber obtained from the coconut husk. Coir mattresses usually have a foam layer in between with the top and bottom surrounded by coir fiber and completed with cotton insulated layers as padding. This type of mattress has been in use since ages and is popular mainly due to its eco-friendly nature.

Choice of coir mattress
Coir mattresses can resist all kinds of moths and are excellent insulators. They can provide the much needed ventilation to the body and withstand moisture.

However, coir mattresses are bad conductors of heat and are a bad idea for people living in cold countries. Even people with wide change in seasons might find it uncomfortable. People living in hot and humid weather for the most part of the year might find this mattress useful and affordable. Moreover, its wide availability has made it widely used among other variety of mattresses available in the market.

Spring mattresses

These are also known as innerspring mattresses and are the most widely used mattresses in today's world. The mattress is covered with coil springs and each coil id enclosed in an individual manner. The upper layer of the mattress is covered with various materials to add comfort to the body. This helps the mattress to be worth using for many years and prevents any coil from popping out. Many sales people would try to sell a costlier spring mattress to you claiming more springs enclosed in the mattress. However, the maximum number of coil springs need not exceed 400 at any time. The excess springs will not have much effect on the body.

Choice of spring mattress
Spring mattress is ideal for obese people as it helps people get in and get out of the bed. Moreover, the longevity of spring mattresses is higher than other conventional mattresses making them the most preferred range of mattresses. The cost is also affordable for everyone making it an open option for many people. Especially, people with back pain benefit with the use of this mattress as the firmer varieties of the innerspring mattresses push the pressure points in the back and help relieve pain.

Latex mattresses

Latex mattresses are made of natural or synthetic rubber. They are known to provide better support to the body due to their bouncy nature. Latex mattresses are durable and the natural material utilized to make a latex mattress makes them last longer than other mattresses on the market. The latex mattress has the best advantage of being customized. They can be made according to one's requirement of size, shape and firmness. However, the major disadvantage of a latex mattress is that it is very expensive and can cost four times more than the normal mattresses. This is due to the fact that latex mattresses using natural rubber are very costly but can last a lifetime. The mattresses using synthetic rubber are cheaper than those with natural rubber but the chemicals used in preparing synthetic rubber can harm a person's body. Moreover, the high elasticity of rubber needs to be toned down using a firm wooden frame bed platform.

Choice of latex mattress
Latex mattress can be ideal for people with acute back pain. The latex helps a body bounce and adjusts to the shape of the person sleeping on it. The long lasting nature of the latex mattress can help a person consider the cost factor at the time of purchase vis-à-vis replacement of other mattresses after few years.

Memory foam mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are the latest innovation in the field of mattresses and can combine comfort and luxury. The top layer is made up of viscose named ‘Polyutherine' which varies in thickness as per the cost. They are resistant to heat and resist all types of bugs and mites. They are best suited for people with back pain as this mattress has the feature of adjusting to the body shape when a person lies on the bed and getting firmer when he leaves the bed.

Choice of memory foam mattress
A high quality memory foam mattress can be very expensive but if one can compromise on cost to achieve maximum health benefits, then one can choose this memory foam mattress over other types of mattresses.

Conclusion

Mattresses are generally made to last for a long time nowadays. However, one should not think of using the same mattress for a lifetime. The quality of mattress gets changed with the changing shape and weight of the body. The requirements of the body might also change and so, a different set of mattress may be suitable after a considerable period of time. The best choice of a mattress is one which makes a person feel comfortable and enjoy a good night's sleep, no matter what the cost or type of mattress is chosen.

I think after the hectic day of work for both the women and men at home, it is the time for relaxing in the evening and sleeping in the night. Therefore it is very much imperative and important that our bed should be of nice quality to have uninterrupted sleeping experience. Normally selecting the mattress is the main problem in every family. Some insists that let all the family members sleep in one mattress and some want to go for different matters to single persons. But in any case choosing a right one and sleeping on it is very important and this article really helps in that regard.

I agree with the writer. Doing research into the “Types" is one of the best ways when choosing any mattress. I think wakefit is best for the ‘Memory foam' types of mattress. I was going through the severe back pain and after lots of research I stopped by Wakefit which I bought later and I now am really very happy and satisfied with it. I bought after reading positive reviews on various social media and e-commerce site. Well written article though.

Mattress is an important item of household utilities and it's proper selection is essential for comfort of body and a good nights sleep.

Now a days it has become fashionable to use thick synthetic mattresses which are very cosy and appear comfortable. No doubt some of the designs of memory mattresses might be quite near to the objective of a perfect mattress.

I have a cheap alternative based on cotton mattress. For this you have to have a flat wooden top cot on which you have to use two cotton mattresses each not weighing more than 3 kg. By placing one mattress over another, you get the same cosiness as that of a synthetic one and the flat bed top holds them perfectly for giving your body a full comfort and support. The advantage of using two rather than one of 6kg is twofold. Firstly it does not sag early and other is maintenance, as each one of them can be taken out to keep under the sun alternately and conveniently as the weight is merely 3 kg.

I am using this arrangement for quite some time and it is very convenient and comfortable.

Now a days many people complain of backache and in such condition a firm and hard mattress is required so that the back can rest on it in a good posture.
Some people advocate for soft mattresses for comfort and ergonomics but the fact is that a hard flat surface with a thin cushion of 1-2 inches on the top is more than sufficient for a good posture.

Researching for mattress sounds exhausting! But it is very important. I learned the lesson the hard way. So, my back was hurting badly for a long time but never did I think it could be because of my mattress. My doctor finally suggested I change my mattress. While looking for a mattress I stumbled upon Sleepwell and the first thing that struck me was the price as it was within the budget.

Bought a Sleepwell mattress and they have got variety! I have been using the mattress for some time now and I really feel a lot better.
