I am a new bird in the world of Google adsense. I love blogging and sharing my thoughts through my posts. Recently I decided to improve my revenues by subscribing to Google adsense by letting them to post their ads on my content pages. But all those terms like ad code, Page Impressions, Click Through Rate (CTR), estimated CPM, ad banner etc initially sounded like words from Mars. God! How am I going to survive these tech word bombs? I suddenly felt like an illiterate.
Now that's so much of the first thoughts but soon my web-techie mind got hold of this vocabulary. It is not a rocket science to understand these words and my past understanding of computers and websites took me through these terminology.
For all those newbees in the web world and bogging sites out there who find it difficult to understand these words and what do they actually mean, here I am providing a very simple explanation of them. I will start with my experience from the first day I applied for Google adsense account to increase my earning by letting Google place suitable ads on my articles. Now keep worries aside and go through this article to know all about it.Various terms used in Google Adsense home page and their meaning:
Page Impressions: By 'page impression' we mean how many times your page has been viewed by visitors.
Clicks : The term 'click' define the number of times ads placed by Google adsense, are clicked by visitors viewing the contents of your page. This term actually decides the earning made by you from Google ads. This value is very less relative to the number of page impressions.
CTR : CTR stands for 'Click Through Rate'. It is directly related to how often visitors click on the ads placed on your page by Google Adsense team. It is proportional to how much money you are going to earn. Though there would be hundreds of visitors on your page weekly but the number of clicks on the ads placed on your content page would be less. According to an expert in the field who guided me in these terms, for about 100 visitors to my page, I should expect on an average only a single click; for some more famous and favourite websites, this number could be larger and thus their earning from placing ads would be larger too. A CTR value of 5 % means that for every 20 impressions on your page, you got 1 click (100 * 1/20 = 5 %) from the visitors.
eCPM : eCPM stands for 'effective Cost Per thousand'. In simple language it is how much you would earn from Google adsense per 1000 impressions on your page. It includes CPM (Cost Per Thousand) and CPC ads. By page impression I mean page views by visitors. An eCPM of $2.23 means that based on your recent data, you will receive an average of $2.23 in clicks for every 1,000 impressions.
Estimated earnings : Estimated earnings gives close estimates of your recent account activity. This is the amount you can expect to earn from Google adsense. For most of the time estimated earnings are accurate but sometimes it may vary depending on a number of factors. Before Google releases your final payment, they will undergo a much more intense audit to pick out fraud clicks and other suspicious activities.
