What reforms in education systems are needed?

There are a number of reforms that are necessary in the education systems of most countries of the world. Chief amongst this is making education affordable to most of the students. Important subjects that would help the student grow socially and be more knowledgeable with issues that affect man in his day to day life should be added into the curriculum.

In many countries around the world a number of pupils and students are unable to acquire education due to lack of school fees. Although the teachers in their school are sympathetic to their plight of lack of money to pay for school fees, they actually need money to maintain these learners in their schools. Textbooks and other essentials like exercise books, chalk and cleaning materials have to be ordered and paid for using this school fees money paid by the students. The school fees paid is also used up in paying staff salaries and general development in the school. The governments around the world would do well to at least give money for free primary education and subsidized secondary school education to students attending public schools in their country.

Political education.

Students in primary and secondary schools should be made aware of the history of their country. This should emphasize on the struggle for independence in that country. The heroes of the independence struggle and wars should be cerebrated in books and lessons made available to the students so that they are made aware that the peace that is being enjoyed in their country at present came at a great painful price. Every student must know the words of the national anthem of the country because this is a clear remembrance of the national heroes. The students must be made to understand that a country is a composition of the many tribes which are found in that country. They should be taught the importance of peaceful co-existence with each other for the sake of gainful diversity of ideas and cultures. In this regard tribalism and tribal conflicts should be avoided at all costs.

Human rights education

Students should be made aware of their legal rights as enshrined in the constitution of the country. Ignorance of these children's rights has made many children to be abused by adults while this can be avoided if these children are aware of these rights which adversely affects them. There have been cases of children being forced on child labour and in the process missing out on their right to basic education.

Moral education.

Moral education involves teaching subject like social responsibility. The students should be made aware of various behaviours which would enhance ones standing socially. At home they must be involved in all the activities run by their parents. In so doing a line must be drawn between what can be classified as child labour and helpful labour to their family. Gender issues should not be ignored by the teachers because if ignored, these pupils will have problems when they are unable to understand their body changes as they grow up. Lessons on drug abuse would be very helpful to the students because at their age there is this likelihood of experimenting on dangerous drugs and substances. Drug peddlers usually mislead students into believing that taking drugs is a cool thing.

Peace education.

There are countries which experience tribal and sectarian wars especially after a national election. This is in most cases brought up by the wrongful belief that there exist superior tribes and sects in a country which have a right to be in power. If a subject of peace education was to be introduced in schools, then the students would be made aware that all tribes and sects in the country are equal in all ways. If this is fully understood then, after a democratic election the verdict would readily be accepted and therefore it would be hard for politicians to incite the citizens to violence. To increase understanding and coherence between various tribes and sects in a country, it would be advisable to integrate students of different backgrounds, tribes and sects in schools. Sporting, athletics and extra-curricular activities competitions amongst schools in the country also promote the notion of tolerance amongst different tribes and sects.

Counselling departments.

All schools and institutions of learning should include counselling in their normal teaching curricular. Constant counselling of students by both teachers and trained counsellors in should be a common thing in schools. In so doing cases of indiscipline and disrespect would be minimized because the students would be advised on the right procedure to solve disputes and modes of proper and effective communication of their problems and worries to the right people. The professional counsellors should also always have private sessions with the teachers because these teachers also might be in need of them. They should be discouraged in these sessions from inflicting harsh punishments to the students. Corporal punishments must be totally discouraged because this causes more harm than good to the teachers, students and the school in general.
