Distance education courses for doctors offered by IGNOU

Introduction about University

This article deals with the distance education courses offered by IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), India particularly for the doctors. This article covers the aims and objectives of each course and for duration, fees and other details one may visit their official website. As far as the University is concerned this is mega distance education university recognized by UGC as well as AICTE and to its credit awarded with common wealth of learning as well as listed in the 12th place in the categories of universities using the internet to serve the students. As this course if meant for doctors, the courses are also specific with some centres attached to hospitals and covers at least one in each state.

Post-Graduate Diploma in HIV Medicine

A MBBS doctor will be benefitted by get training on standardize HIV medicine and may be fill the gap of manpower needed in the antiretroviral therapy ART centres. In these centres there are two doctors (one SMO with MD and MO with MBBS) and to upgrade MO to SMO with Post graduate Diploma is the main objective of this course and hence with the colloboration of National AIDS Control Organizition (NACO), IGNOU is offering this course.

Post Doctoral Certificate in Dialysis Medicine

MD/DNB in Medicine or Paediatrics are eligible for this course. Also PG qualification in Geriatric Medicine, Anaesthesia, Critical Care medicine, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and Tropical Medicine will be considered if number of applications are less. This helps to be qualified medical experts in dialysis medicine/kidney diseases.

Post-Graduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health

MBBS doctors, who have completed their compulsory rotating internship to get trained in the Reproductive Health, Child Health and Public Health components of Maternal and Child Health. After doing this course, these doctors shall be eligible to enroll as Secondary Candidates for a course duration of 2 years in DNB(family medicine) in all NBE Accredittated Hospital/ lnstitute running these courses.

Post-Graduate Diploma in Geriatric Medicine

This Programme aims at equipping the practicing doctors with knowledge and skills in the field of Geriatric Medicine and enable them to deal with the special problems faced by the elderly where the epidemiology and the clinical features of diseases vary in this age group and drug dosages and interactions also differ. Geriatric management requires not only medical interventions, but also special economic and environmental interventions. This programme aims at not only enhancing the knowledge but also multiskilling the doctors so that they can provide primary-level care to the elderly.

Medical graduates of Allopathy, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Yoga and Naturopathy can do this course as this Acupuncture is a traditional method of therapy with no side effects and useful in all types of diseases, specially the chronic diseases and cost of the treatment is cheaper. It shall help the doctors to learn a new therapy and utilize it for patient's benefit in treating acute and chronic diseases.

Post-Graduate Diploma in Hospital and Health Management

This course is designed for all the medical graduates listed above and also others who are in hospital service like nurses, managers, pharmacists to get acquainted with management skills to manage people, finance,materials, assessing clinical and non-clinical needs of patient care and administrative techniques.

You may get into the website of IGNOU where you can have admission notification to the courses listed in the article and accordingly as per your specialisation interests you may take up the course according to the eligibility set by the University. Usually University has two cycle of admission in January and July.

@Punitha and Pathak,

The courses given in this article are applicable only to the Doctors and not for fresh MBBS and I doubt MBBS cannot be done through distance education in India.

You can do the course on Post graduate Diploma in HIV as prescribed in the article being a doctor as a profession.

If you want to do only for the sake of practical knowledge, there is another course offered in this university which is called as Diploma in HIV medicine and family education which is meant for all who have done 10+2 too.

I have done my MBBS from Mumbai. I would like to know if DNB family medicine is still available after PGDCMH.
Do we have to appear for secondary DNB CET test or can we give the final exams of DNB family directly after the PGDCMH course? And can we do MRCGP side by side with it?
Kindly guide me in this regard as nowadays people give more weightage to degrees rather than the knowledge of doctors(sad attitude).

It may not be possible to do the basic MBBS degree via distance education. These courses are only for those who are already practicing and to enhance the knowledge of specialization they may need from time to time.

For the basic degree you may have to go through the procedure for it in India in various states. All the best for your medical courses.
