Using Google to identify images

Do you know that you can identify anything in an image with Google? This article explains how you can identify any personality, place or thing in an image with Google Image Identifier. You only have to upload the image or give its link, and Google will identify who or what is in the image.

Google identifies/detects what is in the image

Google can be used to do various amazing things like doing calculations, seeing weather reports, making currency conversions and much more. Here I am going to highlight the ability of Google to identify Images. Google can be used to identify the place, object or personality in any image. Whether the image which you want to identify is on your computer or on the internet, you can directly use Google to identify which place, thing or personality is in that particular image. For example, I have the following image which I want to identify;

Step-wise procedures to identify images with Google

1. Open Google Images (

2. Click on the "Search by Image" icon in the Google search bar as shown in the picture above;

3. Select "Upload an Image" in the next screen if the image is on your computer, or alternatively if the image you want to identify is on the internet, just paste the URL of that image in the search box, when "Past image URL" is selected.

4. After uploading your image or pasting its URL, Google automatically searches and tries to identify the image. If this process does not start automatically than click the blue colored "Search by image" icon, and the search results will be shown within seconds. For the image mentioned above in which I wanted to identify the personality, Google Image Search returned the following results;

5. The results page above shows that "Google Image Identifier" has correctly identified the image as Atal Behari Vajpayee (the Ex-Prime Minister of India).

6. Google Image Identifier results thus return the name / identification of the personality / place in the image and also give relative web links on which (more) information about that identified object exists.

Note that the procedure for identifying anything (a place, object or personality) is the same.

Doesnt work! There is no search by image button anymore, this is very outdated! An update with info on how one can upload their own image to search via google would be nice.

@Jonathan Redding
Dear I will update the article with the valid procedure soon. However the image search option is still there, if you go to and click on the camera icon within the Google Search bar, you can upload any image to Google and search it's similar images.
