The CFTRI Mysore through its International School of Milling Technology has scheduled to begin admission 2013 for its 33rd regular one-year international certificate program in Flour Milling Technology in August 2013. This 12-month certificate course has been organized primarily to benefit the needs of the flourishing milling industry in our country and other developing nations as well. Suitable candidates may now apply for the allotted 20 seats in flour milling technology course to be commenced on 19th August, 2013.

Central Food Technological Research Institute

Established in 1950, the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) has become a pioneer institution in the field of food science and technology and human resource development gearing up the R&D in the same. CFTRI, an ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 14001:2004 Institution with ISO 17025:2005 Accredited laboratory has been managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, GoI. Celebrating its diamond jubilee this year, CFTRI Mysore has begun its admission process for one year international certificate program in flour milling technology.

International School of Milling Technology

The International School of Milling Technology (ISMT) at the CFTRI Mysore campus was instituted in 1981 as a joint venture between India and Swiss. It has been known as Roller Flour Miller's Federation of India project. It had been initiated to fulfill the enormous requirements of the Indian flour milling industries and other developing nations' by imparting training at par with the international standards. With the 32nd batch being in process and to be completed, almost 605 aspirants so far have been trained inclusive of 100 participants from foreign countries. They are from Bangladesh, Ghana, Guyana, Jordan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Liberia, Mongolia, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Srilanka, Syria, Suriname, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, West Indies, Yemen, and Zambia. Since the inception of the course, the functioning of the flour mills has been changed qualitatively and accordingly with the feedback from the milling industry.

Infrastructure of ISMT

ISMT has been the first ever as such, started to serve the milling industry in the Southeast Asia region. Benefitted by the expertise and infrastructure of renowned CFTRI, ISMT is equipped with complete computer controlled pilot roller flour mill, through which the participants are trained in the milling systems meeting the Indian and international standards as well. The facilities include analytical laboratory to test physico-chemical attributes of raw material and end products. Additionally, test baking and pilot scale baking equipments to assess the quality of milled products have been facilitated. Furthermore, CFTRI's well equipped library in Food Technology and Science has added an advantage to the aspirants in food science and technology. Above all, the teaching faculty comprises esteemed staff members from various departments of CFTRI to handle the curriculum of the course.

Flour milling technology

The department of flour milling technology focuses on training and R&D in the field of milling and baking of wheat products. Its research involves milling, baking of healthy and traditional bakery products, rheology of wheat flour, dough and by-product utilization. In addition to this, it offers expertise service to the milling industry in order to update the technical and managerial skills of the professionals.

Curriculum of flour milling technology
The curriculum being taught at the ISMT consists of theory as well as practical subjects. It has been categorized into following four groups:
1. Milling and cognate subjects to include diagram technique, mill operation, mill machine, mill practice - I & II, automatic milling practice, cereal science and baking technology
2. Basic subjects of physics, chemistry and mathematics
3. Applied subjects namely mechanics, electrical technology-theory and practical, energy management, technical drawing, infestation control, packaging technology, feed milling, nutrition, and computer science.
4. Study tour to different commercial rollers flour mills & allied industries.

The one-year certificate course also features in-plant training for four weeks at the ISMT Mill with the capacity of 20 tons per day and automatic mill practical classes in which each candidate will be given training as head miller. Guest lectures on various subjects have also been conducted by highly qualified faculties. The ISMT mill has been equipped with latest machineries in the cleaning and grinding section with flour fortification and automatic handling and packing of flour. The course curriculum has been designed as such to turn out them best technical cum managerial personnel to manage the modern roller flour mills.

Course fee
A course fee of Rs. 75000 for Indian nationals and US$ 8,000 for foreign participants has been collected.

Application process
1. The application form to be downloaded online or application form and prospectus can be obtained by post by sending requisition letter along with the crossed Indian postal order or demand draft of Rs. 150 for Indian nationals and international money order or bank draft for US $25 for foreign candidates drawn in favor of "The Director, CFTRI, Mysore."
2. Duly filled-in application form should be sent along with the crossed Indian postal order or DD as stated above if downloaded online to the address as followed "The Coordinator, ISMT, CFTRI, Mysore – 570 020 India" on or before 02 July 2013.

Eligibility to apply for admission:
1. The aspirants must have completed Bachelor's degree/diploma in technology/engineering/science/commerce/arts or equivalent.
2. Candidates appearing for final year exams this year may also apply and they need to submit the marks/grades on or before 02nd July 2013.

Mode of Selection
Mostly candidates have been selected based on merit, i.e., marks/grades of the qualifying degree or diploma. If needed, CFTRI Mysore may conduct an aptitude test or interview. Preference will be given for candidates with experience in flour milling or sponsorship by flour milling industry.

Key dates to remember
1. Closing date for the completed application form with DD/Postal order to be sent: July 2nd 2013.
2. Commencement of the course: August 19th 2013.
