IIPS Mumbai admission 2013-14 for M.A., M.Sc., M.Phil, Ph.D. in Population sciences programmes


International Institute for Population sciences (IIPS), Mumbai invites application for admission in postgraduate (M.A./M.Sc., M.Phil.) and Ph.D., Diploma in Population Sciences/ Studies programmes and post doctoral fellowship for the academic session 2013-14. Admission process for postgraduate and doctoral programmes for the academic session 2013-14 is opened at International Institute for Population sciences (IIPS), India. IIPS has invited application from the interested and eligible candidates for admission in various programmes.

International Institute for Population sciences (IIPS) was formerly known as Demographic Training and Research Centre. The institute was established in the year 1956 in Mumbai under the joint sponsorship of the Government of India, the Government of United Nations and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. IIPS got the status of 'Deemed University' in the year 1985. The institute provides research and training in population studies. The institute also provides consultancy services in matter related to population to Government of India and United States .

Programmes offered


  1. Master of Arts/Science in Population Studies :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have obtained minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Candidates holding a bachelor's degree in Math/Statistics/Economics or any social science subject shall be given preference.

    • Duration: Two years.

    • Seats: Fifty

    • Fellowship: The candidates offered admission would be provided fellowship of Rs. 5000 per month. The fellowship is awarded by Government of India.


  2. Master of Science in Bio-Statistics and Epidemiology :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have secured minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Candidate should have passed Bachelor's degree in either of the discipline: Mathematics, Statistics, Health Sciences, Life Sciences, B. Pharma, Medicine.

    • Duration: Two years.

    • Seats: Fifty

    • Fellowship: The candidates offered admission would be provided fellowship of Rs. 5000 per month. The fellowship is awarded by Government of India.


  3. Master of Population Studies :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have obtained Bachelor's degree in Mathematics/ Statistics/ Economics or any social science subject from a recognized university with minimum of 55% marks.

    • Duration: One year.

    • Seats: Fifty

    • Fellowship: The candidates offered admission would be provided fellowship of Rs. 5000 per month. The fellowship is awarded by Government of India.


  4. Master of Public Health :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have secured minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Candidate should have passed Bachelor's degree in either of the discipline: Mathematics, Statistics, Health Sciences, Life Sciences or equivalent, Psychology ,B. Pharma, Sociology , Medicine , Economics, Health Economics, Population Studies/Demography, Health Sciences- Public Health/Community Health, Bio-Statistics, Bio-technology, Epidemiology, Public Management, Public Administration, Social Work, Pharmacy, Nursing, Mass Communication or five year Medical Degree.

    • Duration: One year.

    • Seats: Fifty

    • Fellowship: The candidates offered admission would be provided fellowship of Rs. 5000 per month. The fellowship is awarded by Government of India.

  5. Master of Philosophy in Population Studies :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have secured minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Master's degree from a recognized university. Candidate should have pursued post graduation in either of area: Master in Population Studies/ M.A/M.Sc. in Demography.

    • Duration: One year.

    • Seats: Fifty

    • Fellowship: The candidates offered admission would be provided fellowship of Rs. 6000 per month. The fellowship is awarded by Government of India.

  6. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Population Studies :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have secured minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Master's degree from a recognized university. Candidate should have either pursued M.Phil or Master in Population Studies at post graduate level.

    • Duration: Three year. The Ph.D. programme can be extended maximum to seven years.

    • Seats: Twenty one

    • Fellowship: The candidates who have qualified NET for Lectureship only in population or its inter-disciplinary subjects conducted by the UGC would be provided fellowship of Rs. 16,000 per month for 1st and 2nd year and Rs. 18,000 per month for 3rd year respectively. The candidates would also be provided a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000 per year for the first two years and Rs. 20,500 for the third year. The candidates who have not qualified NET shall be given fellowship of Rs. 12,000 per month for the 1st and 2nd years, and Rs. 14,000 per month for the 3rd year, and a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year. The fellowship is awarded by Government of India to Indian students only.


  7. Post Doctoral Fellowship :
    • Qualification: Candidate must hold Ph.D. degree in Population Studies.

    • Duration: One year.

    • Seats: Five

    • Fellowship: The candidates offered admission would be provided fellowship of Rs. 50000 per month to be awarded by Government of India.

  8. Diploma in Population Studies(Distance Learning) :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have obtained graduate degree or equivalent from recognized Indian/Foreign universities.

    • Duration: One to three year.

    • Seats: Sixty

  9. Master of Population Studies(Distance Learning) :
    • Qualification: Candidate must have obtained Master's degree in any social science subject/ Health/Mathematics/ Statistics or allied subjects from a recognized Indian/Foreign University.

    • Duration: Two to four year.

    • Seats: Hundred


Age limit


The upper age limit for various programmes as on 30th June, 2013 has been mentioned below.
  1. The upper age limit for Master and M.Phil programme is 30 years.

  2. The upper age limit for Ph.D. programme is 30 years for General candidates. SC/ST/OBC and women candidates have relaxation of five years in upper age limit i.e. 35 years.

  3. The upper age limit to apply for fellowship is 40 years.


Selection criteria


  1. Candidates applying for Masters programme will be selected on the basis of a common entrance test, personal interview, and academic records.

  2. Candidates applying for Ph.D. programme will be selected through common entrance test on Research Methodology, personal interview and academic records.

  3. Candidates applying for post doctoral fellowship will be selected on the basis of submission of comprehensive research proposal and interview.

  4. Candidates applying for distance-learning Diploma and Master programme will be selected on the merit basis of their qualification degree.

  1. Obtain the application form and brochure from the institute in person . Or send a self-addressed Rs. 50 stamped envelope at following address before 28th June, 2013 by post "Assistant Registrar (Academic),, International Institute for Population Sciences, Deonar, Mumbai-400 088".   2. Send the completely filled application form along with application fee of Rs. 400 in form of DD. The demand draft should be drawn in favour of Director, IIPS, Mumbai. SC/ST/OBC candidates are exempted from application fee.

  3. The application form should be sent by Speed Post/ Registered Post at the following address before last date of submission:

  4. Last date for application submission is for Master programmes is July 1, 2013. The last date to submit application programme for doctoral, fellowship and distance learning programme is July 31, 2013.

  1. Attested copy of Class X or equivalent examination for age proof.

  2. Attested copy of mark sheet and certificate of qualified examination.

  3. Attested copy of caste certificate(applicable to SC/ST/OBC candidates)

  4. Work experience, sponsorship certificate and NOC from employer(applicable to sponsored candidates.
