Overview of SASTRA University

SASTRA University was initally known as Shanmugha College of Engineering when it came into existence in the year 1984. It has now been renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research academy (SASTRA). IT is a UGC recognised university under the section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. It is located in Tamil Nadu, India. Its distance from Thanjavur is about 17 kilometers and that from Tiruchirapalli is about 40 kilometers. The university can be reached by all three modes of transport- Train, bus and air. It has a huge, campus built on an area of over 30, 00,000 sq.ft. It has more than 10,000 students and over 700 academic staffs which makes the University surely a renowned name in the educational field of India. The mixture of academic excellence, practical experience and ethical values has made SASTRA a nationally recognized University. The mission of SASTRA University is to provide value based education that can produce best engineers, scientists and researchers who are also individually good citizens.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has accredited SASTRA University with A- Grade.

All B.Tech courses in SASTRA University has been accredited by the Institution of Engineers, India.

Amenities

The campus of the University is equipped with all modern facilities and amenities. Some of which are as mentioned below.

Central Library

The institute's central library, Saraswathi Sadan is a masterpiece of architecture. It is spread over an area of about 47,000 sq. ft. It has modern study area, internet facilities, audio visual room and reprographic facilities. In addition to the central library, the individual schools have their own library too with technical books and journals.

Banking

The campus has a branch of the Indian Overseas Bank. It also has two ATMs one of which is especially for the girls at the girl's hostel. A City Union Bank ATM is also located in campus.

Post Office

There is a post office within the campus which has been established by The Department of Posts & Telegraph.

Canteen & Bookstore

The canteen at SASTRA creates an in-formal environment for get- together of the students. Various delicious culinary is served in the canteen. There is a bookstore in campus for enabling students to buy stationery.

Hospital

SASTRA requires a complete health analysis that includes immunization records of all full time students. Medical treatment given by the nursing staff and doctor on campus free of any charge. However, any off- campus medical expenses will be borne by the students. In case of emergency there is an ambulance facility free of cost to take the students to hospitals.

Hostel

There are 6 boy's hostel and 2 girl's hostels in campus. It can accommodate up to 3000 boys and 1200 girls. The hostels have beautiful ambience and all facilities such as living, dining and recreation. The hostel provides balanced atmosphere for recreation and studies.

Indoor Stadium

The indoor stadium of the University has been named as ‘Maruti'. It has badminton courts, billiards tables, a basketball court, carrom board and table tennis. The lighting has been done smartly in order to provide good view during the sports.

Gymnasium

The indoor stadium has a gymnasium inside it. It has sophisticated Gym equipment to maintain good health and good physique. There is a separate Gym for girls.

Admission into B.Tech and M.Tech (5-years integrated) Programmes

The admission into both B.Tech and M.Tech (5-years integrated) Programmes in SASTRA University will be based on merit. The admission will be conducted through two streams-

Stream 1- Based on marks of +2
Stream 2 – Based on JEE Main 2013

Stream 1- Students will be admitted on 70% of the total seats through this stream. The candidates need to fill only one form and they will be eligible for both the streams. No separate forms are required. To create a list according to merit, the marks of the students in +2 or equivalent exam will be normalized. This will be done to provide same scale of comparison for different boards. In each board, the highest mark obtained will be considered as 100% and the aggregate marks of others will be normalized according to that. For example, The highest marks obtained in a particular Board is 98% and an applicant's aggregate from that board is 90%, then his normalized percentage would be 90/98x100 = 91.83%. Total seats in stream 1 will be filled in the following manner.

Stream 2 – Remaining 30% seats will be filled based on JEE (MAIN) All India Rank. In case there is any tie in Ranks, the score of Mathematics, chemistry and physics in JEE (MAIN) will be considered. In case the ranks are not released the JEE (Main) 2013 aggregate marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will be computed for granting admission.

Eligibility for both the programmes

Candidates who have passed class 12th or equivalent exam recognized by any State Board/Central Board/ or any other accepted as equivalent by SASTRA, taking Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects with any of the following- Chemistry/Computer Science/ Biology/Bio- Technology, with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in the mentioned subjects, are eligible to apply for the two programmes. A candidate should have obtained the aggregate 60% Marks in single sitting.

Student with diploma in Engineering or Technology are eligible for direct admission into the second year of any B. Tech programme.

A candidate should not have completed 19 years of age as on 1st July 2013 (21 years for Lateral Entry)

Fee Structure for both the programmes

Tuition Fees: Rs. 45,000/- per semester

Development Fees: Rs. 10,000/- (need to be paid only one-time during admission)

Other fees: Rs. 7,000/- (need to be paid one-time during admission). This includes fee for Personality Development, Unit Tests, Sports, ID Card, Marks verification, Medical Test, etc.

Hostel Charges: For only those students who will reside at the hostels in campus. Students of the first year can reside in hostels on shared accommodation basis. The Annual charge for this will be Rs. 6,000/-. The approximate food charges will be Rs. 2,400/- per month. Single room will be available only to senior students and the annual rent will differ.

The application fee for online submission is Rs. 650/- Candidates will need a valid credit card for online submission of forms.

Commencement of classes for B.Tech/M.Tech(5-Years): 15th July, 2013

Important Notes regarding admission into SASTRA University

Candidates are allowed to attend counseling for stream 2 though they are admitted under Stream 1. They can change branch, if they want to.

Candidates are advised to submit application with both class 12th and JEE (Main) 2013 results along with relevant photocopies. The candidates are advised to enter details of the both so that they can attend both counseling using the same application form.

The students who have yet not received the class 12th mark sheet can submit the online version of mark sheet with application forms. The photocopy of the original mark sheet will be required during counseling.
