While I appreciate the author for taking pains to bring about the merits of distance education in developing India, I am of the firm opinion that our students are not habituated to study or prepare for the exams on their own, unless and until someone is after them to do so. That means they need a teacher, professor or a mentor to guide and bring them to the reading and writing platform. In that situation by merely getting notes and articles through distance education may not serve the purpose as laxity on the part of students practising must be more.

An excellent article! With the advancement of technology the people, especially from semi-urban and rural areas of the country, have the opportunity to get the benefits of higher education. I personally availed the benefit of distance education after joining Government service. In this regard, I would like to state the following:-
(a) The contribution of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU: Website-www.ignou.ac.in) is required to be mentioned for the spread of distance education in the country. In short, the achievement of IGNOU in this field is stupendous.
(b) Now, many state-level open Universities have been formed in the line of IGNOU.
(c) However, there are some controversies regarding acceptability or approval of various courses by UGC and other accreditation bodies. Government may come out with suitable clarifications to remove confusions in this regard and for the sake of students who enroll for these courses.
(d) Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) are also important in spreading education in respect of additional knowledge on specific topic. In India, MOOC should be more popular among people with internet access.
(e) More stress must be given on distance education in respect of practical-oriented subjects with adequate facilities.
I thank the author for raising consciousness on the importance of distance education in the country.
