They say, "It is not for the sake of school that we study but for life." The popular saying holds even more value in a country like India which has a mean age of 24. This would mean, a much younger generation readying its next breed for the future which is all the more dynamic and demanding. We all want an all-round and conducive growth of our kids; be it in academics, sports or an overall development, which will prepare them for a rapidly changing socio-economic environment. As parents, we want our kids to be leaders, better decision makers, independent and responsible citizens. At a tender age of childhood, it is much easier to mold them and inculcate the best values. While education is of utmost importance for this, other facets of development hold equal significance, which can be imbibed with more exposure and a detailed guidance that a residential school can offer to its best.

Residential schools profoundly help in imparting robust social communication skills and teach children to take charge of their decisions under the right guidance. While at home, a child will receive the best upbringing and affection from parents, a residential school helps children to completely submerge themselves into an atmosphere that nurtures them well in every sphere. A child juggling with multiple activities will become much smarter and efficient.

Apart from several benefits that a residential school can offer you, a few of them are:

Thorough academics: Stretching children intellectually gives residential schools an edge over normal schools. Rigorous academics taught in depth expands children's outlook towards life. An experienced teaching staff housed within the campus becomes approachable for children leading to an increased interactivity and discussion, warding away any kind of inhibition that a child suffers from. This promotes strong bonding and respect for teachers.

Ample of extracurricular activities: With many activities to choose from, a child gets to explore his talents and interest. Sports helps keep them fit and instill camaraderie and sportsmanship spirit within them. By getting trained in a stress free environment, children broaden their vision and sharpen their focus. Extra activities also help them distract from homesickness and becomes a source of entertainment.

Round-the-clock supervision: Parents, mostly, tend to become over-protective about their children and keep a tab on their whereabouts, especially during their teens. The situation can give rise to conflicts between children and parents that becomes a hindrance in children's independent decision making abilities. Residential schools can brilliantly fill this gap by allowing children to pursue their interests within the confined safe campus of the school. Residential schools are also ideal for families where parents frequently travel for work.

Indian history has always glorified residential schools in the form of Gurukuls. A modern age adaptation of residential schools, keeping in conjunction with the current scenario, can only help children get an edge over a normal schooling. Families that send their children to such schools achieve the best prospect for their kids who get groomed well to become the future leader.

Studying in a residential school is not a new concept. From time immemorial, Indian education system has revered and respected this ageless system of learning. It is an ancient mode of instruction, where the teacher and the taught resided in the same premises so that the student could learn discipline and knowledge under the able guidance and supervision of the teacher. Even in Ramayana and Mahabharata, the great legends have left their homes to get education at the Ashram of their Gurus.

Coming to the above article, it was well presented about the residential schools and the legacy of the old tradition of Ashram Vidyalayas are continued even today.

Thanks for useful info. It helps to parents, while choosing the school for their kids. My son is studying at Candor International School for the last 2 years and I'm extremely happy about my decision of choosing candor school. The curriculum exposes a child to multitude of experiences, as opposed to being solely focused on book learning.

Thanks for the detailed article on advantages of studying in a residential school. During my childhood, I too wished I could study in a residential school. However, there were very limited number of residential schools in the country and also they were really expensive. But as I became a parent, I don't think residential school system is the best. On the other hand, I can see a lot of problems in studying in a residential school.

Can you throw some lights on your views about the negative impact of studying in a residential school?
