Format of sample letter to Bank for informing change of address

Would you like to know how to write a formal letter to the Bank to inform of change in address? This article provides a format of letter to the Bank for modification in Bank address details.

Importance of informing the Bank of address change

When you shift to a new place, even if it just across the street, one of the major steps you need to take is inform your Bank. Even if you have not changed your email ID, it is necessary that you intimate your Bank of the change in postal address. For one thing, the postal correspondence which the Bank sends to your postal address may be returned to the Bank (if the Bank branch address is mentioned on the envelope somewhere). Otherwise, it will just be yet another "unknown addressee" mail confined to a dusty shelf in the post office.

Let's consider a few scenarios where your correct address needs to be known:
Scenario 1: You go to the Bank and request for a new cheque book. The Bank will send the cheque book to your address by courier. If you have forgotten to inform the Bank of the change in address, naturally you will not get the cheque book. Then will follow a phone call or visit to the Bank, to find out why the cheque book was not delivered. In short, needless time wasted.

Scenario 2: It may so happen that an ATM swallows up your Bank debit-cum-ATM card & you need to communicate this with the Bank. If the Bank issues a new card, it will be delivered to your address. Naturally, how are you going to receive it if you have not informed the Bank of your new address?

On the more serious side, if there is some fraudulent activity associated with your account and the Bank cannot contact you directly on phone, imagine the consequences. Intimating the Bank of your new address is thus very important!

Note that if you change your office address too and it is part of the details given to the Bank when you opened your account, then also you should inform the Bank.

Important Tips for submitting letter to Bank of address change

You need to keep a couple of important things in mind when intimating the Bank of your new address.
  1. It is important to submit a formal letter to your Bank to inform of the change in your address. Merely informing them by email or on phone is not sufficient.

  2. You will also need to support your letter with some proof of the change of address. You may also be required to submit a photo ID proof even if you have submitted the ID proof earlier when opening the account.

  3. It is best to visit the Bank in person to submit the letter.

  4. Do not put any originals of the documents in the envelope you are sending to the Bank (if sending by post).

  5. Ensure that the signature in the letter is matching that of the one in Bank records.

  6. The postal pin code is very important for a simple reason. Even if you are staying in an unknown area or have forgotten to provide the road name, the postmen are very knowledgeable of the pin codes. Simply from the pin code, they may easily able to trace your address by asking around about you by name in the local shops. What's more, since they are regularly delivering in the area, they will be aware of the location of your building. This has happened in my own personal case!

  7. With change in address, you may be able to transfer your landline phone number to the new address. Whether or not this is the case, you should also provide your contact numbers in your letter.

  8. Specify whether you want the new address to be the same as that for communications with the Bank. Some people provide their office address as the address of communication so you need to be clear about this.
