How to pay online bills in India

Queues and queues everywhere! Last date fast approaching and queues at the cash counters of payment of bills get swollen on the last due date of the bill to avoid penalty or even disruption of services. Are you paying your bills online in India? If not, start now to avoid disruption of services and heavy late fees to be added in next bill.

Only yesterday one of my doctor friend, who is managing a diagnostic centre including CT Scan, X Ray machines, Ultrasound Machines and so many other machines, came to me in the night around 10 PM along with an electricity bills which had to be paid immediately failing which Electricity Board may not cut the electric connection or if it is not paid then late fees of around 12000 INR will be added next day. All cash counters get closed at 5 PM sharp. My doctor friend was desperate to get the bill paid in time. As he is my best friend and he knew that I will bring him out of the crisis, he visited me late in the night along with his wife. I made him sit comfortably on the sofa and asked him to relax as in this digital world next day will start only after 24:00 Hrs at midnight and I had 2 hours available with me to pay the bill. I asked my doctor friend following few questions all of which were replied by him in negative:

  1. Whether he had any Net Banking facility as bill could be paid through BillDesk facility in NetBanking.
  2. Had he registered Visa Bill Pay services and enlisted all his billers as Visa Bill Pay not only facilitates payment of bills but also remind you of an on about your pending bills by your service providers in addition to Cash Back offers.
  3. Had he registered his profile and electric bill account with the State Electricity Board.
  4. Was he having IMPS enable on his fully loaded with features Smartphone.

After getting replies in negative to all my questions above, I took the following steps:
  • First of all I registered and activated a consumer profile with the concerned service provider which could be made active within a few minutes.
  • On refreshing the profile it showed the outstanding electric bill of the doctor friend with last date to pay as today's date.
  • I heaved a sigh of relief and was sure that I will be able to make the payment through from my own net banking account, before both the clock needles could strike at 12 signalling the start of the next day at midnight that is 24:00.
  • My Doctor friend was excited and it was a thrilling experience for him to save penalty of INR 12000 by making the payment in time.
  • Now I clicked on the Pay Button alongside the outstanding electric bill.
  • it took me to 'select mode of payment' like Credit Card, Debit Card or Net Banking.
  • As I always avoid using Credit or Debit Cards for online transactions, I opted for NetBanking and selected PNB Retail, which took me to the login page of my PNB NetBanking.
  • I logged in to PNB retail banking with my userID and the Bill amount was picked up automatically.
  • After cross checking the particulars I pressed the final payment button.
  • Lo, the bill got paid around 10.35 PM and receipt got generated and printed.

My doctor friend was extremely happy that I could save him Rs.12000-00. From that day onwards he started visiting me daily to know about "How to handle payment of online Bills" and different type of options available to the subscribers.

The author has written a very useful and informative article. I have a doubt in this regard. Generally when I use such facility, though the receipt etc. is generated but sometimes a message comes that the amount will be credited in the account in 24/48 hours. This indicates that despite executing successful transaction, the amount reaches the service provider's account only after some gestation period. After all it is not RTGS, in which case real time transfer takes place. So apparently one can take a stand in legal cases that I had paid the bill prior to closing hour but practically what is the actual status in such cases.

@Kailash Kumar, Having paid the bill through service provider's portal or Bill Desk etc is equivalent to paying in cash. But do not wait till the eleventh hour as due to delay even in seconds may result in paying the bill after due date which is valid up to 12/24:00 Hours formats.

Well as regards to paying online bills in Hyderabad there are many ways and out of which the first preference would be through the E seva centers. These are the government approved private operated e challan accepting centers where in we can pay online fees , book TSRTC bus tickets, Railway tickets, utility bills, phone bills, accepting birth certificate, death certificate and so on. Of course for every service they charge some nominal service charges which is meager and acceptable. So what we are guaranteed is the hassle free transaction, your money is directly credited to the department concerned and even the sms alert would be received. Now with the demonetization the role of these on line e seva centers or mee seva centers has been increased and now they are even accepting debit cards, credit cards, cash and even cheques for some payments. Some bank appointed micro finance companies which are called Griha Mitras which are also functioning to deal with bank related works and they also transfer funds to other banks instantly by charging some nominal charges. So all these facilities are available for the common man to utilize to avoid heavy rushes at the banks and other pubic utility service counters.

I pay most of my bills online. In some of them I get some minor discount or cash rebate which gets reflected in the next bill.
However, in exploiting the situation, many providers are now taking service charges directly or their gateway partners take that. This is to be stopped. By online bill payment the organisations get their bills paid promptly mostly and the organisation saves in many ways like staff cost, environmental cost of lighting, space, security etc. This cost saving they should pass on to the bill-paying clients.

A good account of the method of payment online. Originally this articles was written in 2015 and at that time many people are not making online payments. But after demonetization, many people started paying bills online. This article will be useful for those people who wanted to make the payments online. These days many apps on mobile came for payments. Tez is a recent addition to such payments. BHIM is another app. PayTM got a very good name these days and very useful for transactions. We are able to pay through this even very small amounts also online and avoiding cash payments. Even the vegetable vendors are having this PayTM app on their smartphones. So by using any one of these methodologies now, we can carry out cashless money transactions and by doing this many of our visits to Banks and ATMs are reduced a lot.

A nice article narrated as a story. Many people like your doctor friend have the initial apprehension for online transactions. They are used to someone from the family or a staff number paying the regular bills of electricity, water, telephone etc. Once they get over this reluctance then they continue using online payment option. Many banks now a days offer the link the regular bill payments on a fixed date from the primary account holder's account. This saves the trouble of having to do it ourselves and more importantly the possibility of late payments, fines etc are not there if there in money on the account. Many cities have one portal like bangaloreone in Bangalore where we can do online payments for many regular services for one website itself.
