When one looks at the manufacturing education courses, one sees a focus on shop-floor operations, while the design methodology aspects are overlooked. Thus the practical implementation of manufacturing technology is either very little or non-existent. To eliminate this, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at IIT Hyderabad is offering a unique post graduate course which incorporates both manufacturing and design. The M.Tech. Integrated Design and Manufacturing (IDM) program will create professional engineers to be more versatile & industry-ready through learning modules in which students will learn about component and system design, new manufacturing methodologies & theoretical and computational approaches. Duration
The course is full-time for a duration of 2 years, covering 4 semesters.Curriculum
The semester-wise curriculum will include various modules, called fractals, each fractal having varying credits from 1 to 3. The aim of having fractals is to provide a wider knowledge than that being currently offered in existing manufacturing and production planning courses. Thus the student will learn not only the fundamentals of manufacturing and production planning, but also develop analytical skills, learn about computational techniques & get an in-depth insight into mechanics and design.
As part of the M.Tech. Integrated Design and Manufacturing (IDM) program, students have to pursue the following mandatory courses:
Students can choose one core manufacturing elective from advance courses in material removal, joining and generative process.
Additionally, there are options to select from the open electives. The list of these open electives is as follows:
To be offered in the future are also these: (i) Precision Machine Design and (ii) Phase Change Phenomenon.
