How to use OTP based e-filing verification system for income tax returns

Want to start using the new OPT e-filing verification system for tax payers in India? This articles explains the electronic verification code procedure for the e-filing verification system for income tax.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Directorate of Income Tax (Systems), Govt. of India has launched a one time password (OTP)-based e-filing verification system for tax payers. The goal of this system is to eliminate the requirement of sending a paper-based acknowledgement to the Bangalore office. The Electronic Verification Code (EVC) will be a 10 digit alpha-numeric number.

EVC and OPT FAQs for income tax returns

Where will the EVC be generated?

The EVC will be generated on the official e-filing website: https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

An EVC can be used to validate how many ITRs?

One EVC can be used to validate only one return, irrespective of the assessment year or return filing type (original or revised).

How long is the OTP valid?

Your OTP will be valid only for 72 hours. The only exception will be in the case of Aadhaar- based verification (see below).

How to access the system?

The facility can be accessed using Internet banking, Aadhaar number, ATM and email.

It is important to note that if your PAN number with income less than Rs.5 lakh has come under some cloud of suspicion, then you will not be allowed to do the verification directly through your cell phone number & email alone. Your access will need to be via other procedures, such as via a link- up through the Aadhaar database or Internet baking or via the ATM.

How to do EVC of ITR through email ID and mobile number?

You should be a taxpayer whose income is Rs. 5 lakh or below Rs. 5 lakh per annum and you should not have any refund claims. You can then generate the electronic verification code (EVC) for e-filing and validating your income tax return (ITR) through your mobile number and e-mail ID registered with the department.

How to do EVC of ITR through Aadhaar OTP?

You have to provide your Aadhaar card number number for linking with your PAN on the e-filing website. It will be verified on the basis of your name, date of birth and gender as per the PAN database with similar data registered with UIDAI. On successful verification of Aadhaar, it will be linked to your PAN. Subsequently, an OTP will be generated by UIDAI and this OTP will be sent to your mobile number which was registered with UIDAI. That OTP can then be used to verify your ITR.

Note that the Aadhaar OTP as EVC will be valid for 10 minutes (or as specified by UIDAI).

How to do EVC of ITR through internet banking?

If you have activated Internet banking, then you can do the e- verification of your ITR through the Net banking avenue. That is, the e-verification can be done using your Internet banking ID, password for log in & password for transaction. Once you log in through this method, you will be directed to the e-filing website where you can generate the EVC which will be displayed and also sent to your validated mobile number registered with the IT e-filing site.

How to do EVC through ATM?

Your ATM card should be linked to a PAN-validated bank account and the Bank should be registered with the Income Tax department for providing this service to generate the EVC via ATM. Use your ATM debit/credit card at the bank's ATM and select on the screen "Generate EVC for income tax return filing". The bank will communicate the request to the IT e-filing website which will generate the EVC & send it to your mobile number. You can then use the EVC to verify your ITR.

As you can see, there are multiple ways to use the e-filing system for tax payers and there is no longer any need to send a hard copy as part of acknowledgement.
