Importance of Thiruvisai Nallur, Tanjore district,Tamilnadu,India


Many villages in and around Tanjore district of Tamilnadu has famous temples of Lord Shiva and among one is Thiruvisai Nallur on the banks of River Cauvery. Temple of Lord Shiva in this village is very old and has the age of more than 1000 years.

India's heredity is unfolded and it has its own multiplicity in all aspects. There are many devotees following Saivism and there are 63 Nayanmaars who were famous for Lord Shiva. Among them four are Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar, Manickavasagar and Thiru Gnanasambanthar. They composed many poems in Tamil on Lord Shiva by visiting many places where Lord Shiva Temples are located. The compositions are mainly called as Thevaram and Thiruvasagam. It contains the pride of Lord Shiva who protects His devotees without any delay alog with pride of each and every temple the four visited.

Location of the Temple

Thiruvisai Nallur is a village near Kumbakonam of Tanjore District in Tamilnadu. It is situated at 20 kilometers east from Kumbakonam.

History of the Temple

The history of temple specifies that this temple consists of shrines for Lord Shiva and Lord Mahavishnu and it has seen all four yugas.

About the Temple

  1. Lord Shiva here called as 'ShivaYoginatha Swami'

  2. Lord Shiva here in the form of Shiva Linga which is genuine and not sculptured

  3. On the Middle days of the month April every year the sunshine falls on the Shivalinga in the Shrine directly

  4. Goddess Name is Soundra Nayagi and the Holy tree for this place is Bilva

  5. Lord shiva in the form of Shivalinga here has seven hair knots in His head as He gave Moksha directly by merging seven devotees within Him

  6. The holy water tank here is called as Jata Theerth

Speciality of the village


  1. Here one Brahmin devotee named Shreedhara Ayyaavaal resided before 300 years. One day he was doing the yearly ritual (Thithi) in his house. At that time a beggar came for food without knowing his ritual. But by seeing his status sreedhara ayyaavaal offered food to him. According to their practice, till the end of such ritual, nothing is to be offered to outsiders, people kept him away from the village operations and asked him to get bath in Ganges. Since it was very difficult to travel to Ganges, he prayed the God and heeded Lord Shiva brought the Ganges into his house well. He did his bath in that well water and cleared his sin.Even today on the one day the well is flourished with good volume of water

  2. On the south side fence of the temple even today we can see a sun clock which formed before 700 years. This was formed in semi circle, numbered morning 6 to evening 6 and at the center having a brass nail. The time was understood by seeing the shadow of sun through the nail. It reveals that the people of that era itself found with extraneous such knowledge

  3. People throngs here for child boon by praying the Lord Maha Vishnu of this temple by offering basil garland

  4. As per the puranas the Nandhi fought with the messengers of Yama to protect the siva devotees. So, people offer prayers here for long life
