My Experience in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya hunts for talented children from rural and urban areas and offers them free education with no extra expenses irrespective of the financial condition of candidates whether rich or poor. I was awarded with this opportunity in younger age. This article describes my journey at JNV and the changes occurred in myself.

I spent 3 years in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Jaunpur and these 3 years were one of the wonderful periods of my life though I did not expect it at the time of admission in JNV. Let's have an introduction of JNV prior to further explanation.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV)

  • JNVs are operated by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, New Delhi under the ministry of HRD, India. This is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi.

  • JNVs spread all over India, one school in each district.

  • This school carries an entrance exam called JNVST (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test) for students studying in class 5th and qualified candidates offered scholarship for 6th to 12th standard.

  • This is co-educational school admits talented students from different regions in respective districts and offers free education.

  • This is fully residential school provided with all the facilities and amenities required to the students free of cost.

  • It provides accommodation as well as lodging and boarding.

  • Text books, note books, stationery items, school uniforms, PT uniforms and other items required in daily use are provided at no cost.

  • Infrastructure is widely spread and divided into school buildings, playgrounds, boys hostel, girl hostel, auditorium, teachers colony and a huge mess.

  • This is very good at teaching, discipline, sports and event organization.

  • My admission in JNV

When I was studying in class 5th, I gave an entrance exam (JNVST) for JNV without knowing what exactly is it. I just appeared, scored good marks and got selected for admission in JNV, Jaunpur. Only 2 candidates were selected from our block and I was one of them.
After selection, I came to know about JNV and its procedure of admission. I was just 11 years, too young to leave my family and to stay in hostel with unknown faces. I refused to go in the hostel of JNV, sat alone on terrace for half day and cried a lot. I was not ready to go at any cost. My elder sister (my idol), she knows how to make me comfortable and happy. She made me to understand the importance of receiving scholarship among so many students and asked me to grab this opportunity. Finally she convinced me and somehow I got ready for JNV.

My 1st day at JNV, Jaunpur

My parents came to leave me with my luggage which included only box contained everything I brought along with me. Oh my god! I was so nervous and was crying continuously. I wanted to go back home but didn't say a single word to my parents being aware of fact that I have to stay here only. They were also emotional and worried. After clearing all formalities, they left me in girls hostel with my luggage.
Full day I kept quite. I wasn't sure what to do, whom to talk and what to talk. I felt that day was longer than any other day before and sad too.

    My journey at JNV

  • I am an introvert person, do not open easily in front of others. Initially I found it tough to adjust but with passing time I learned to manage in hostel. Also learned to deal with different kind of girls coming from different places. I mixed with others, made good friends and I was fully enjoying my life at JNV although always kept remembering my family.

  • Daily routine of JNV was quite interesting and kept us busy full day. It included waking up early in the morning for PT, after PT freshen up time, breakfast, morning assembly, classes, Lunch, resuming classes, sports time in the evening, evening assembly, rest/study time, dinner, study time and at last it was bed time. Everything was punctual.

  • I was admired for studies, art and maintaining cleanliness in our hostel. Sometimes I was awarded with punishment too for bunking classes, talking in between classes and violating rule of visiting out of campus boundary. Overall it was a nice experience.

  • Usually my mother and sister used to visit twice or thrice a month in weekends. Though I was comfortable at JNV and availing all the opportunities of amusement but thought of going back to home did not evaporate.

  • After completion of academic year we had summer vacation of 1.5 months. We were allowed to visit our home in between at some occasions also with limited holidays. Whenever I returned from home after holidays, every time I prayed to God to create such a situation that sends me again back to home to enjoy additional holidays. I know this is a stupid wish and it never got fulfilled.

  • What I learned from JNV

JNV taught me many things in my young age.
    1. I became responsible towards my actions.

    2. Learned to manage in outside world which was not limited to my family and friends.

    3. I developed a big interest in sports like volleyball, kabaddi and khokho.

    4. I started eating everything whichever I used to avoid before at home. Sometimes food taste was not good, it was just compromising but I never complained about it to anyone and ate with love.

    5. It fostered me to develop my personality and I became more confident about myself.

    Left JNV forever

JNV offers migration of some of the students from 9th class to JNV, Kerala for a year and the same number of students migrated here in JNV, Jaunpur. Every student wanted to be a part of this migration but only few of us were selected and I was one of them.
I was so excited to visit Kerala but it could not happen. After completion of 8th standard, my family suddenly planned to relocate in Pune. They did not insist me to leave JNV and join them in Pune. They wanted me to continue my studies in JNV. Even I wanted to carry on JNV and wanted to be migrated to Kerala next year but never wished family going far away for a longer period. I chose to go with my loved ones and left JNV in between.
Joining JNV and leaving JNV, both were painful. I cried while entering JNV and cried while exiting JNV too. I never wanted to come in JNV but it was really a wonderful experience of my life. I left my friends at JNV.

I reached Pune and continued with the studies. One day I received a letter from JNV, Kerala. One of my friends who was migrated to Kerala for 1 year sent it to me. She elucidated her experiences in Kerala. I couldn't drop in there with my friends but her explanation made me feel Kerala as if I was there. I read that letter again and again with a continuous smile on my face. Whole memory of JNV appeared in front of my eyes. I was happy.
