Few months back, Google announced that it will take an initiative on free WiFi service in selected Railway station in India, bringing the internet to more Indians, as a pilot. It may extend the same service in other than selected hundred railway stations after its successful beginning.
I was on a travel recently and facing a lot of issue for browsing from my Smartphone and Laptop due to WiFi net connectivity unavailable on the way and Data pack or its signal issue while roaming. Though I paid extra money for browsing while roaming, still I got a lot of issues for net connectivity and browsing, specially while needed to check the confirmation ticket or book a ticket online or to get some online info of train and flight etc.
What happened to me is, other than browsing issue despite having WiFi Dongle (with roaming option) and additional data pack charges for net connectivity through SIM to use while roaming, still the problem for browsing continued in selected places or even in main cities too. I was trying to go to some cyber café for browsing but they were not nearby or they were not near the Airport or Railway station or even Bus stand etc. We have to go a bit far which we have to waste the energy and time for anything to check even if it is arailway ticket confirmation.
The other problems were battery issue of a Smartphone and Laptop while traveling. Yes, though a traveler will likely have a power bank for a smartphone, still it is not enough and one has to charge it often. The second thing is laptop battery issue while roaming. Anyhow, when I reached Agra, I still got the net connectivity issue and sometimes my personal WiFi Dongle worked and sometimes not. I went to a Sleeper Waiting Hall and Relaxed for a while.
I suddenly remembered at that time about 'Free WiFi service at selected Railway station in India', so, why not try it? Thus, I switched off my personal WiFi dongle and then switched on WiFi mode and found that 'Indian Railways WiFi service' signal is showing. I got a bit happy that Agra is one of the Railway stations which might help on free WiFi service for browsing. So, I again followed the steps that it was asked of me. You will find below the steps to get free WiFi service in select railway stations in India.Guideline for using free WiFi service at Indian Railway Station
Note: This service allots only few MB or 10MB to 20MB per day, so, do not immediately disconnect the net / browser after usage as this one then asks every time for a new password to re-enter the webpage if once disconnected the browser. So, once you are connected to the net for the first time, it is not necessary to disconnect it unless you leave the place, or else, you have to every time request for a new password for the day if you disconnected the browser.
The second thing is, if you have Dual SIM with two different numbers: if you finish the quota of the first SIM, you may then use the second SIM number to get enough Data from this service. I suggest you to use if required and do not waste-free WiFi data for just entertainment.
As you will discover with the above guidelines, it is a breeze to use free Wi-Fi at a railway station in India!
