Top Scholarships for Indian Students in Australia

Indian students can apply for a number of scholarships at top Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth universities for bachelors, masters and postgraduate degrees across various disciplines. Funding is available from the Australian government and universities.

Australia is a top choice of Indian students who want to study abroad, without the high costs of living and tuition in US and UK universities. In addition to lower fees, Australia also offers Indian students plenty of financing options in the form of scholarships, grants and awards from the Australian government, private funds and individual universities for their overseas education in Australia.

Scholarships for Indian Students in Australia

Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS)

Offered by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, these scholarships are awarded to for all levels (masters, bachelors, PhD) to applicants from select countries, to participating institutions in Australia. Awards typically cover full tuition fees; return air travel, allowance for accommodation & study material, contribution towards living expenses, health cover, costs of any Pre-course English fees, costs of fieldwork etc.

  • The application process is listed on the 'open and close dates' list for each country. Indian students are also usually eligible for these awards, though no Indian applicants are being taken for 2017.
    • Application deadline: No Indian applicants are being accepted for the 2017 period.

    Endeavor Scholarships and Fellowships

    These are a series of merit-based and competitive fellowships and scholarships offered to international students. Indians can apply for the following scholarships in particular: Endeavour India Education Council Research Fellowship, Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research Fellowship and Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship#.

    Award value includes travel allowance ($3,000), establishment allowance ($2,000 (fellowships) or $4,000 (scholarships)), monthly stipend ($3,000), OSHC, travel insurance. Scholarship recipients will also receive tuition fees.

    Short term masters, PhD or postdoctoral research fellowship awards include Up to $24,500 for 4 to 6 months. Postgraduate scholarships include up to Up to $272,500 (PhD) or $140,500 (Masters).
    • Application deadline: Applications now open, deadline closes June 30, 2016 at 11:59 pm AEST (June 30, 2016 7.29 pm IST).

    International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

    IPRS grants are offered for postgraduate research with participating universities, for a period of 2 years for a research master's degree or three years for a research doctorate degree. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health covers for holder and dependents. IPRS scholarship holders can also apply for the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) administered by individual universities.
    • Application deadline: Varies across participating universities.

    Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI)

    These merit-based scholarships are offered in the form of two-year tuition fees for research students of Masters Degree courses and three year tuition for a Doctoral research degree. Annual living allowance of $26,288 for those time periods are also offered for each type of degree. The scholarships also cover Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the student and dependents for the duration of their student visa, as long as they hold a Subclass 574 visa.

    Only students who are applying for the degree as an 'international student' of the University of Adelaide can apply for the scholarships. Acceptance is merit-based. You can apply online. There is no application fee.
    • Application deadline: 31 January 2016, 30 April 2016 are the application deadlines for the two remaining rounds in the coming year.

    Australian National University (ANU) Scholarships

    The website for the Australian National University offers a searchable database for a number of scholarships funded by ANU. Some of these applicable to Indian students are listed below.
    • ANU College of Business & Economics International Merit Scholarship for Foundation Studies (tuition fees); deadline 31 May 2016.
    • ANU College of Engineering & Computer Science International University Partnerships Award ($5000 per year).
    • ANU College of Business & Economics International Graduate Scholarship (50% tuition), deadline 31 May 2016.
    • ARC Centre of Excellence for Plant Energy Biology Jan Anderson HDR Supplementary Scholarships ($7000 a year); deadline 1–31 August 2016.
    • Ethel Tory Language Scholarship - European & Middle Eastern Languages (value is variable; offered to international ANU students studying languages full-time outside Australia, but not in India); deadline 23 April – 23 September 2016.
    • Postgraduate accommodation bursary offered to full-time ANU students in financial need. Value varies, and applications will be accepted from 18 July – 12 August 2016.
    • Sir Geoffrey Yeend Honours Scholarship ($5000 per annum for full-time honours students in Political Science, Visual and Performing Arts and Asian Studies; deadline: 31 August – 30 November 2016.
    • Terrell International Undergraduate Scholarships (50% or 25% of tuition plus OSHC to international students enrolled in ANU; deadline: 4 April – 11 July 2016.

    Flinders International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (FIPRS)

    These scholarships cover tuition fees and offer a stipend for international students who want to pursue a higher research degree at Flinders University in Adelaide. The scholarship is awarded to candidates who demonstrate the ability for independent research. The university also offers a $26,288 living expenses that is tax-exempted along with establishment allowances of $1,485 when students move to Flinders from India.
    • Application period: 16 June 2016 to 12 August 2016.

    La Trobe Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES)

    Undergrad and postgraduate students can apply for $10,000 and $20,000 yearly scholarships paid for two semesters, as long as they are applying for a new postgraduate or undergrad program at the university. After receiving the offer letter, students can complete a scholarship application form available online and submit it to the university.
    • Application deadline: 6 May 2016 for Semester 2 2016 and September 2016 to January 2017 for Semester 1 2017.
