As per the data published by the UNESCO Institute of Statistics, the top 10 countries chosen by the Indian students during the year 2013, for study abroad were US (92597), UK (22155), Australia (16150), Canada (9582), UAE (9273), New Zealand (6845), Germany (5645), Ukraine (3587), France (1828) and Saudi Arabia ( (1817). Also as per data available from other resources presently about 2.64 Indian students are studying abroad involving annual expenses on an average Rs. 10.24 lakh ($22650) per student. Thus total Rs. 27000 crores ($5.9 billion) are spent by Indian students per year for study abroad. This amount is more than double of the Union budget alloted for higher education in India.
